Top pitching performances guide SCSU to sweep at UMC

The St. Cloud State University baseball team (29-11, 20-8 NSIC) relied on two outstanding pitching performances to gain a 3-0 and 4-1 doubleheader sweep at Minnesota Croookston (18-22, 12-16 NSIC) on Wednesday, April 19 in Crookston, Minn.
In game one, SCSU starter Cal Giese (Plover, Wisc./SPASH) crafted a three-hit shutout in the 3-0 win. He pitched 6.0 innings and notched four strikeouts before teammate Miles Nablo (Eden Prairie) gained the save with one inning of work in the seventh to ice the game.
The Huskies scored all three of its runs in the first inning as Bo Schmitz (St. Cloud Cathedral) singled to bring Judd Davis (New Ulm) for the first run. Mat Meyer (St. Stephen/Sauk Rapids-RIce) later doubled to score Schmitz and Jordan Joseph (St. Michael-Albertville). A solid pitcher's duel, the Huskies outhit the Golden Eagles 5-3 in the game.
In the nightcap, Dominic Austing (St. Cloud Cathedral) was on top of his game with a complete game one-hitter in the 4-1 victory. In 9.0 innings of work, Austing had 12 strikeouts and only allowed one walk for the Huskies.
The Huskies scored two runs in the third inning with a single to center field by Meyer, which scored Schmitz and Davis. In the fifth, SCSU added one run with another RBI single by Meyer that scored Mitch Mallek (Plover, Wisc./SPASH) before Jackson Goplen (North St. Paul/St. Croix Lutheran) doubled to score Meyer. UMC's lone run of the day was scored in the bottom of the seventh to make it 4-1.
SCSU outhit UMC in the game 8-1.
The Huskies will continue their 2017 season on April 22 with a 3 p.m. home doubleheader against Winona State at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud. The day has been designated as SCSU Baseball Alumni Day and a special tribute to the Huskies' 2016 NSIC Tournament title team will take place between games of the doubleheader. A post-game social for the SCSU Baseball Alumni at the Ultimate Sports Bar and Grill in Waite Park will benefit former SCSU player and coach Pete Pratt, who is currently battling health issues.
