Softball Falls to Minnesota Duluth 7-1 In First Game of NSIC Softball Tournament

Sioux Falls, S.D. – The St. Cloud State softball team (31-22) lost the team's first game at the NSIC Softball Tournament by a 7-1 score to Minnesota Duluth (35-18) on Thursday, May 4, at Bowden Field. The program will now face an elimination game against Northern State (29-25-1) later this afternoon.
Senior Megan Hedstrom (15-10) was tagged with the loss after allowing all five runs in one third of an inning on two hits, a walk and two hit batters. Sophomore Kate Kopeck pitched well in allowing two runs in 5.2 innings of relief with two strikeouts.
UMD exploded for five runs in the opening frame. Hannah Schmoll walked and stole second to begin the rally. Becky Smith moved her to third with a base hit. Kalynn Tilton was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lauren Oberle was then hit by a pitch to drive in Schmoll with the first run of the game. Sami Sadler plated Smith with her RBI single. Ashley Taipale was hit by another pitch to drive in Tilton. Hannah Bloch made it a five-run first and drove in both Sadler and Oberle with a single.
The Huskies answered with a run in the second inning. Sophomore Morgan Emmans had a lead-off single and moved to third on a double from Alyssa Coletto. Freshman Anna Roth followed with a single to center to score Emmans.
The Bulldogs added a run to the lead in the fifth inning on Oberle's 10th home run of the season.
Minnesota Duluth finished off the scoring with a run in the sixth inning. Taipale hit her sixth home run of the season to add a single tally to the score.
Sam Hartmann (13-9) earned the victory for Minnesota Duluth with one run allowed and six strikeouts.
The Huskies now play an elimination game against Northern State at 4 p.m. today at Bowden Field. The winner of that game will see their season extended until Friday, May 5, at 10 a.m. against the loser of Minnesota State and Minot State in another elimination contest.
