St. Cloud State Softball Wins Inaugural Outdoor Game at Husky Stadium, Splits Pair with Dragons

Huskies take game one, 4-3, drop game two, 3-2
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (35-14, 14-7 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) split its inaugural outdoor doubleheader with MSU Moorhead (15-34, 7-15 NSIC) at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud on Friday afternoon. The Huskies won the first game 4-3 but fell 3-2 in the second.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 4, MSU MOORHEAD 3
The game was scoreless through 3 2/3 innings, before the Dragons broke the deadlock with a bases loaded walk to take a 1-0 lead. SCSU responded with its most active inning of the game, scoring four runs on four hits. Senior utility Rainna Stangle (Sartell, Minn.) came in as a pinch hitter and delivered with an RBI-double to right field. Senior catcher/outfielder Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) drove in the Huskies second run and redshirt sophomore infielder Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) closed out the inning with a 2-RBI double to right center field.
MSUM made a comeback attempt in the top of the seventh, cutting its deficit to one, but junior right handed pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) came in and shut the door, recording the final out of the game after issuing a full count walk in her first matchup.
TOP HUSKIES
MSUM jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after hitting a solo shot to center field. In the third, the Huskies tied the game at one after Frechette hit an RBI-double to right field. The Dragons responded in the next half inning with a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead.
In the home half of the sixth inning, Holzhueter hit an RBI-single to left field to bring SCSU within one run. In the bottom of the seventh, the Huskies attempted a squeeze play to tie the game but were called out at the play at home and tagged out on the basepaths on a game-ending double play by MSU Moorhead.

SCSU returns to Husky Stadium for its final home games of the 2025 season on Saturday against Northern State (10-33, 4-18 NSIC) at noon and 2 p.m. In between games, the program will recognize its six seniors; right handed pitcher Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn.), Fitzgerald, right handed pitcher Molly Gross (Columbia Heights, Minn.), Holzhueter, infielder Evy Polsfuss (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Stangle.

- Porter earned her ninth save of the season to extend her single season personal best.
