Huskies finish regular season with twinbill sweep of Bemidji State

Bemidji, Minn. - Â The St. Cloud State baseball team (36-14, 27-11 NSIC) closed out the regular season with a doubleheader sweep over Bemidji State (19-31, 16-22 NSIC) on May 6 at BSU Baseball Field. The Huskies took the first game by a dominating 9-1 margin, following up the win with a 9-6 decision in game two.Â
In game one, the Huskies opened up the scoring, registering the first four runs of the game. The Huskies got on the board right away with a Bo Schmitz scoring Judd Davis. The Huskies then added three more in the fourth inning off of two hits from Cooper Maas and Ethan Ibarra, scoring Schmitz, Mitch Mallek, and Mathew Meyer.Â
Bemidji State would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth, but the Huskies rebounded quickly in the fifth when three Huskies were brought home by a Logan Swann single to bring the score up to 7-1. The Huskies would add a run in the sixth and the seventh to bring the score to a final notch of 9-1 to earn the win in game one.
Zach Sigglekow was the pitcher of reference for the Huskies, moving his overall record to 4-0. The Huskies outhit the Beavers 10-4, and had only one error to Bemidji State's six.Â
In game two, the Huskies also came out hot in the first inning, putting two quick runs on the board with thanks going to Schmitz bringing in Jordan Joseph followed by Jackson Goplen bringing in Mallek. The Huskies would go down 3-2 to the Beavers in the bottom of the first and would have to find a way to fight back into the game after the Beavers eventually getting up 5-2 by the end of the third period.Â
The fourth inning would prove to be the turning point for St. Cloud State as the Huskies got back into the habit of scoring runs, starting with Judd Davis bringing home Ibarra to bring the score to 3-5. Davis would prove to be the hot ticket player as his bat would bring in two more Huskies when he hit a single and advanced to third base on an error by the center fielder. The error would bring in Maas and Ibarra. Joseph would follow immediately after Davis to bring him home, putting the Huskies back in control of the game at 6-5.Â
The Huskies would add two more runs in the sixth, with Meyer bringing in Joseph and Goplen scoring Mallek to bring the score to 8-5. Swann would help the Huskies put one more on the board as Swann would bring Schmitz in to home base in the eighth inning to make the score 9-5. The Beavers would add another in the bottom of the ninth to solidify the score at its final mark, 9-6 in the Huskies favor.Â
The Huskies doubled up on the Beavers in the hitting department, registering a 14-7 margin. Each team committed one error. Kevin Bolder was assessed the win for the Huskies, moving his season record to 2-0.Â
The Huskies will have a few days of rest before beginning the NSIC Tournament on May 10. The Huskies will be hosting the tournament running from May 10-13 at Joe Faber Field and Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud, Minn. The Huskies will open the tournament in the final game of day one, facing off against Minnesota Duluth at 6:30 p.m. on Joe Faber Field.
