Football Starts Home Season Against Winona State On Saturday

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University football team (1-0, 0-0 NSIC North) returns home to Husky Stadium to host Winona State (1-0, 0-0 NSIC South) on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. The game is the home opener for SCSU after beginning the season on the road last week.

Scouting Winona State
- Winona State went 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the NSIC South last season.
- The Warriors opened the 2017 season with a home 30-20 victory over then No. 25 Bemidji State on Aug. 31.
- Winona State raced out to a 20-6 halftime lead in the victory.
- WSU's Darren Beenken completed 24 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
- Winona State's Eric Birth scored a pair of rushing scores.
- Jake Balliu totaled four catches for 43 yards.
- Will Claussen had a catch for 55 yards.
- Andrew Spencer led the team with 11 tackles.
- Spencer also had a sack and an interception.
- Nick Pridgeon tallied two tackles for loss.
- Cole Monckton recorded seven tackles and three passes defended
Prior Meetings
- SCSU is 42-14-4 all-time against Winona State in the 60 previous meetings
- The Huskies have outscored the Warriors in those 60 contests by a combined score of 1,083-523
- The last time these two teams met was during the 2015 season with SCSU winning on the road against WSU by a 31-20 score.
- St. Cloud State scored 21 points in the second half to take the lead and control.
- Former SCSU quarterback Nate Meyer completed 18 passes for 215 yards and also ran for 109 yards and a score.
- Former running back Jaden Huff sported 126 yards rushing and two ground scores.
- Former receiver Jameson Parsons hauled in five passes for 115 yards.
- Brady Westart totaled 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks in the victory.
- The Huskies were able to get 320 rushing yards and 535 total yards in the win.
- The program also picked up 25 first downs and controlled the clock for 34:17.
- The Huskies were able to defeat the Warriors by a 29-26 score the last time the two teams met in St. Cloud during the 2013 season.
- The series dates back 1920 with St. Cloud State winning the first contest 9-0.

- The Scott Underwood Show is held at 7 p.m. weekly regularly on Mondays during the football season at the Green Mill Restaurant in downtown St. Cloud.  Fans are invited to come out and listen to the show live at the Green Mill and enjoy some great menu discounts available during the show on Monday.  The show is hosted by the voice of the Huskies, J.W. Cox and airs on Granite City Sports (1390granitecitysports.com) from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.

- St. Cloud State opened the 2017 season with a comeback 41-26 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Aug. 31.
- The program overcame a nine-point deficit and outscored the Mustangs 24-0 in the second half.
- Joe Blando led the attack in the season opener with his 38 carries for 163 yards plus two touchdowns.
- It was the first time that Blando has surpassed 100 yards rushing in a single game in his career.
- Blando's 163 yards rushing makes him just the 12th running back in school history with more than 160 yards in a contest in the long history of the program.
- Further, Blando is just the 28th running back in school history to get to 100 yards rushing in a contest.
- Dating back to last year, Blando's 163 yards rushing were the team's third straight game having a 100 plus yard rusher with Jaden Huff running for 107 against Minnesota Duluth (11/12/16) and 232 Minot State (11/5/16).
- Blando's 38 carries are tied for the second-most in a single game in the school record books.
- John Solberg went over the 100-yard threshold in receiving yards for the first time in his career with seven catches for 103 yards.
- Having both a 100-yard rusher and receiver in the same game was a first for the program since Jaden Huff and Nate Meyer both ran for over 100 yards and Jameson Parsons caught passes for 115 against Winona State (9/26/15).
- Carvel Graham picked off a pass and returned the interception for a 42-yard score against SMSU.
- It was the program's first interception return for a touchdown since Jack Horter against MSU Moorhead (10/31/15).
- Freshman kicker Adam Stage made a pair of field goals, 38 and 30 yards, plus all five of his extra points.
- The 38-yard field goal was the longest for the program since Eric Mielke's 46-made field goal against Northern State (10/25/14).
Next Week
- The Huskies are on the road next week and travel to Concordia St. Paul to play against the Golden Bears on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m.
- SCSU is 4-0 all-time against CSP including a 28-10 home victory when the teams last met during the 2015 season.
- SCSU recorded a 34-3 victory over Concordia-St. Paul the last time the programs met in St. Paul (9/21/13).
