SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – It might be snowing in the state of Minnesota, but it is still very much the heart of football season at St. Cloud State University. As the white stuff starts falling for the ground, the Huskies have been busy preparing for their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) showdown with the University of Sioux Falls, which is set to take place this upcoming Saturday.
St. Cloud State enters the weekend riding high as the team came through for a big 23-17 win over Wayne State College last weekend. A last second interception by Ben Gutschow (Amherst, Wis. / Amherst) clinched the Huskies victory, while touchdowns from John Pass (Elk Grove, Ill. / Elk Grove) and John Solberg (Cambridge, Minn. / Cambridge-Isanti) and three field goals from Adam Stage (Appleton, Minn. / Kimberly) accounted for the 23 points.
Sioux Falls, on the other hand, is coming off a somewhat devastating loss to Bemidji State. Entering last weekend, the team was ranked No. 21 in the nation by D2football.com and was receiving votes in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll. After the 25-21 loss to the Beavers, the Cougars were knocked out of the one top-25 poll and received just one vote in the AFCA poll this past week.
The game between St. Cloud State and (RV) Sioux Falls is set to take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Bob Young Field in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Fans who cannot make the journey can follow the game via live stats, video and WJON's live radio broadcast on 1390 Granite City. Updates will also be made to St. Cloud State football's Twitter account (@SCSUHuskiesFB) when time allows.
Here are the five things to know before this weekend's game between the Huskies and Cougars:
13 – After another outstanding performance against Wayne State College last weekend, St. Cloud State is now ranked thirteenth in the nation in rush defense, as it's given up just an overage of 89.5 rush yards per game. In fact, the Huskies have allowed just 537 total rushing yards this season on 230 attempts, making St. Cloud State the third best rush defense in the NSIC behind Minnesota State and Minnesota-Duluth.
279.5 – The Huskies stalwart defense will have their hands full on Saturday as they try to stop one of the most prolific rush attacks in the NSIC. Sioux Falls currently leads the conference in rush yards per game, as the team has averaged 279.5 yards on the ground through six games this year. Leading the way is the NSIC's leading rusher, Cougar running back Gabriel Watson, who is currently averaging 172.7 yards per game, which is more than any team but one has rushed against St. Cloud State this season.
77 – The Huskies defense recorded a season-high 77 solo tackles and two interceptions in last weekend's 23-17 win over Wayne State. Jack Horter (Sussex, Wis. / Marquette) led the way with eight solo tackles for St. Cloud State, including one tackle for loss of 11 yards. The senior linebacker also recorded one of the Huskies two forced-fumbled and recovered the ball for a 40-yard return. Ferris Ingraham (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) was named the team's defensive player of the week after impressive with seven total tackles, four of which were solo, two and a half tackles for a loss of 15 yards and a sack.
31:02 – Sioux Falls has a bit of a ball hogging problem this season. The Cougars time of possession through six games averages out to be approximately 31:02, which ranked fourth overall in the conference. St. Cloud State is not far behind, though. The Huskies rank sixth in the NSIC in time of possession, as they average 30:28 minutes of offense per game.
296 – Since leading the team to victory against Northern State on September 22, sophomore quarterback Justin Czech (Chippewa Falls, Wis. / Chippewa Falls) has certainly racked up some big numbers. Since taking over as the starter, Czech has recorded 296 total yards in the air, while completing 22 passes on 53 attempts. The sophomore has also recorded three touchdowns, three interceptions and rushed for 33 net yards in three games.
