Series Preview | Huskies Look to Prevail in Rematch Against Concordia-St. Paul

St. Cloud State was defeated by the Golden Bears earlier this season in the Tucson Invitational Games.
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State baseball team (9-6, 2-1 NSIC) will be traveling to Minnetonka on Sunday to take on the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears (11-3, 4-0 NSIC) in a four-game series. This weekend's series was pushed back to Sunday, March 25th and Monday, March 26th due to forecasted weather predictions. St. Cloud State is coming off of a series win against the Upper Iowa Peacocks while the Golden Bears enter this weekend with a 4-0 conference record after sweeping Minnesota Crookston.

SERIES PREVIEW
Following the schedule and venue changes, the Huskies will be playing on an artificial turf surface for the third time this season. SCSU is 4-1 this season on turf which include the games at Missouri Western State and at US Bank Stadium against the UW-Parkside Rangers.
Offensively, the Huskies are led by their three outfielders, Caeden Harris, Jackson Goplen and Mitch Mallek. Each of them is batting at least .350 or higher with Harris leading the team and the conference at .472. Last weekend against UIU, the three combined for six RBI's, seven hits and four extra-base hits.
On the mound, ace Dominic Austing is 1-0 with a 4.05 ERA over 20 innings of work. Kyle Boser is 1-2 with a 4.43 ERA in 20.1 innings while SCSU closer, Nathan Strobel is 1-1 with one save and a 2.08 ERA in 8.2 innings pitched.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
CSP enters the weekend series with a streak of 47.1 consecutive scoreless innings that includes six straight shutouts. Last weekend against Crookston, Josh Gaworski threw a no-hitter in their third game while Gus Varland allowed one hit in his seven innings of work that also included ten strikeouts. As a staff, CSP has only allowed 17 hits and struck out 74 hitters in their last 46 innings.
At the plate, Drew Sannes leads the Golden Bears in batting average (.468) which trails Harris' conference best of .472. Connor Trygstad is also above the .400 mark while Carter Schmidt is at .391. Between the three of them, they have totaled 27 RBI's on 66 hits while combining for 11 extra-base hits so far this season.

SERIES HISTORY & LAST MEETING
In 2017, SCSU was 4-2 against CSP. The Huskies split with Concordia at US Bank Stadium in a two-game set then later went 3-1 in a weekend series in early April. Earlier this season, the two met in the Tucson Invitational Games where SCSU fell by a score of 6-5. In the contest, the Huskies' bats were cold for the first five innings. The Golden Bears started Josh Gaworski and he threw a stellar five innings, only allowing one run on two hits while recording five strikeouts. SCSU eventually scratched across five runs to trail by one entering the ninth inning. Matthew Osterberg shined out of the pen. He did not allow a run over 3.2 innings of work where he also struck out three. Jordan Joseph and Ethan Ibarra each had two RBI's while Caeden Harris picked up three hits.

According to weather.com, the Huskies will see a high of 47 degrees on Sunday with a 0% chance of precipitation. Winds are likely to be between 10-20 MPH blowing southeast.
