4/11/2018 9:16:00 AM | Baseball
Duluth, MINN. – After going 3-1 last week, the St. Cloud State baseball team (18-9, 11-4 NSIC) hits the road to take on the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs at 11 AM and 1 PM at Wade Stadium.
The Huskies were originally scheduled to host the Bulldogs in St. Cloud, but Joe Faber Field was deemed unplayable due to the amount of snow still on the playing surface.
SERIES PREVIEW
The Huskies' pitching staff led the way for SCSU's success last week against Augustana and Wayne State. In each of the four games last week, a different SCSU pitcher went at least seven innings deep. Dominic Austing, Kyle Boser and Aaron Hammann each went eight innings in their outings while Shannon Ahern threw a seven-inning complete game in his start.
Dominic Austing's eight-inning shutout performance earned him NSIC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Austing and Boser are the likely starters against Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday.
At the plate, Mathew Meyer tallied six hits and 2 RBI's with two doubles on the week. Bo Schmitz recorded three hits and 3 RBI's in the series finale against Wayne State while Caeden Harris had the Huskies' only RBI in their 2-1 victory over Augustana last Thursday.
SCSU sits fourth in the conference standings, trailing Augustana, Minot State and Minnesota State Mankato.
Minnesota Duluth swept Southwest Minnesota State in their last mid-week, then was swept in a two-game set by Minnesota State Mankato last weekend.
Marcus Fredrickson and Alex Ferguson were the two pitchers of record for the Bulldogs against Mankato.
UMD scraped across one run in the series against MSU, with Henry George recording the sole Bulldog RBI. Duluth was shutout in the second game, 12-0.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Tyler Midas paces the UMD offense with a .391 AVG while Anders Brown and George Henry are each hitting over .300 as well. Midas leads the team with 20 RBI's, 10 doubles and four homeruns. Ben Danielson trails Midas with 19 RBI's while Eric Yachnich has tallied 16 RBI's on the year.
Bulldog ace, Marcus Fredrickson is having a solid year, owning a 2.65 ERA over 37.1 innings. However, the Huskies can expect to see junior southpaw, Jalen Busker in game one. Busker is 3-2 on the season and holds a 3.82 ERA over 30.2 innings. Busker is second on the team in strikeouts with 22, while having walked 11 batters in 2018. Colin Baumgard is the expected game two starter. A righty who is 3-0 on the year with a 2.25 ERA, Baumgard has thrown 24 innings and logged 17 strikeouts while walking five.
