Goplen’s Walk-Off Gives Huskies Series Split in Duluth

St. Cloud State entered the bottom of the ninth in game two trailing, 5-4.
Duluth, MINN. – After dropping game one of their mid-week series, 4-2, the St. Cloud State baseball team (19-10, 12-5 NSIC) rallied back to win, 6-5 in dramatic fashion over the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs at Wade Stadium.
GAME ONE SUMMARY (SCSU 2 | UMD 4)
In another pitcher's duel featuring Husky ace, Dominic Austing, the junior showed strong in seven innings of work while only allowing four runs and striking out six. Austing was the pitcher of record for SCSU, moving to 2-1 on the year.
Mathew Meyer totaled three of the Huskies' four hits in the two-run loss. Aaron Hammann recorded the Huskies' sole RBI in the seventh inning to spark a late rally that fell short.
UMD's Jalen Busker received the win in game one, going 6.1 innings and only allowing two runs on four hits.
GAME TWO SUMMARY (SCSU 6 | UMD 5)
Kyle Boser was nothing short of spectacular in his seven-inning performance for the Huskies. Boser struck out nine of the 28 he faced while allowing four runs on seven hits.
After finding themselves in a three-run deficit going into the bottom of the sixth, the Huskies scratched across two runs to bring it within one. Jordan Joseph doubled home Jackson Goplen, then sophomore, Aaron Hammann doubled to score Joseph.
Bo Schmitz sent a double into left field with one away to start another Husky rally. Mathew Meyer would then single home Schmitz to tie the game at five a-piece.
In the ninth, UMD would push across one to take a 6-5 lead off of a lead-off triple from Eric Yachnich. Yachnich would score on a single through the left side.
With one out, Bo Schmitz led the comeback with a single through the left side. Schmitz would then advance to third off of two passed balls. Junior, Mitch Mallek would single home Schmitz to tie the game at five a-piece. Mallek would go on to steal second then advance to third on a throwing error. Senior captain, Jackson Goplen was the hero the Huskies needed when he singled home Mallek for the Wednesday walk-off win.
Trevor Koenig (2-0) was the pitcher of record for SCSU because he was the last pitcher to record an out before the Huskies won in the bottom of the ninth.
UP NEXT:
St. Cloud State is scheduled to travel to Winona, Minn. to take on the Winona State Warriors on Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15.
