GAMEDAY PREVIEW | Huskies and Golden Eagles Meet for Midweek Showdown in Crookston
4/18/2018 11:58:00 AM | Baseball
The Huskies are entering Wednesday's games after not having played in one full week.
Crookston, MINN. - Following a 1-1 week where the St. Cloud State baseball team (19-10, 12-5 NSIC) only played two games against Minnesota Duluth, the Huskies will take on the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles (16-19, 2-14 NSIC) at 1:30 and 3:30 on Wednesday, April 18th at the UMC Baseball Field. SCSU was scheduled to play Winona State last weekend, but inclement weather conditions cancelled the series altogether.
Â
The Huskies were originally scheduled to host the Golden Eagles in St. Cloud, but Joe Faber Field was deemed unplayable due to an excess amount of snow on the playing surface.

SERIES PREVIEW
After a weekend off from games, the Huskies are entering the mid-week double-header with a full staff and fresh legs on the base paths. SCSU is expected to start Dominic Austing (2-1) in game one, with sophomore southpaw, Shannon Ahern (5-0) the likely candidate for game two.
SCSU is looking to carry their momentum from Wednesday's walk-off win over the Bulldogs into today's twinbill.
Six of the nine batters in SCSU's line-up are hitting over .300, with Caeden Harris, Mitch Mallek and Mathew Meyer leading the Huskies at the plate. Senior, Jackson Goplen is pacing the club in RBI's and stolen bases as well.
As a team, SCSU sits fourth in the NSIC rankings and is carrying their conference-best, .316 average into the series.
Minn. Crookston enters the series with some momentum of their own following a series sweep over the Bemidji State Beavers. UMC's four-game winning streak is their longest since winning six straight on their Florida trip in early March.
Â
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Reed Hjelle is leading UMC in average (.398), doubles (12) and RBI's with 36 on the year. The Golden Eagles' lead-off man, Anthony Stewart is hitting .340 on the year and has driven in the second-most runs on the team, with 26. Senior shortstop, Ethan Mushitz leads the team in homeruns with six.
Zach Rustard (2-5) and Jayden Grover (3-2) have logged the most innings for the UMC staff, but their bullpen features three arms with a sub-3.40 ERA in Aaron Hollcraft (0.00 ERA, 8.2 IP), Graeme Cherry (3.07 ERA, 14.2 IP), and Zach Seipel (3.38 ERA, 24 IP). Sepiel is UMC's hard-throwing closer who has logged a conference high of six saves on the year.
