Gameday Preview | Huskies Host Minot State in 2018 Home Opener

After 35 consecutive games on the road, the Huskies return home to St. Cloud.
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Head coach, Pat Dolan has deemed the 2018 St. Cloud State baseball team (23-12, 16-7 NSIC) as the "Road Warriors" due to their extended travel efforts to play games that accommodate the weather conditions throughout the spring. After 35 straight games on the road, Dolan and the Huskies return home to St. Cloud to host the Minot State Beavers (23-12, 21-4 NSIC) for a midweek series at Dick Putz Field. First pitch between the Huskies and Beavers is slotted for 3:00 with the second game of the twinbill to follow.Â

St. Cloud State was 4-2 on the week after recording a midweek sweep at Crookston, where Dom Austing and Shannon Ahern each picked up a win on the mound. The Huskies would split their four-game set against MSU-Mankato on Sunday and Monday. SCSU fell in game one by a score of 5-3, then won games two and three, 9-6 and 2-1. The Huskies dropped the series finale in an 8-2 finish. Dom Austing and Matt Osterberg were the pitchers of record in SCSU's two wins, while Kyle Boser gave a full effort in the series opener. Boser went eight strong innings while striking out seven only allowing two earned runs on eight hits and one walk.Â
The Huskies also had a strong week at the plate, with Bo Schmitz, Aaron Hammann, Jackson Goplen, Mitch Mallek and Isaac Matchinsky leading the way.
Bo Schmitz tallied six RBIs on 6 hits, 2 HR against UMC while Aaron Hammann had five RBI on 6 hits, 1 HR and picked up the save in SCSU's game two victory against UMC after striking out two in 1.2 innings of work
Jackson Goplen had 5 RBI on 3 hits, a 2B, a HR against UMC, added five RBI's on 3 hits, 1 HR, 1 HBP against MSU. Matchinsky had 2 RBI's on four hits against MSU that included his first homerun of the year.Â
Mitch Mallek drove in four RBI's on five hits last week. The junior also had two HR's in game two against MSU.Â
Minot State is coming off of a 5-1 week that included a midweek sweep over Bemidji State. MSU took three out of four against the Sioux Falls Cougar last weekend.Â
- Minot State won five of their six games last week while sweeping Bemidji State and taking three of four games versus Sioux Falls in their first home games of the season
- The Beavers hit .352 as a team with 69 hits, 20 doubles, five home runs, 49 RBIs, 52 runs scored and 12 stolen bases
- Minot State ranks first in the NSIC in doubles (75), home runs (39) and slugging percentage (.478) while second in runs scored (243), RBIs (211) and stolen bases (63)
- The Minot State pitching staff held Bemidji State and Sioux Falls to a combined .237 batting average while surrendering 20 earned runs and striking out 43 opposing batters

Minot State is leading the conference in homeruns with 39 and holds a .286 AVG as a team. On the hill, the Beavers have a 5.19 team ERA with Justin Demary and Andres Hackman pacing the staff with a sub-5 ERA in over 40 innings pitched a piece.
Celestino Rodriguez and Michael Borst are the top two hitters for MSU. Rodriguez is leading the team in average at .349 with Borst also hitting a solid .344. Darrell Doll leads the team with 8 HR's and is hitting .298 on the year.Â
Scott Eul's Beavers were on a five-game winning streak prior to their game two loss against Sioux Falls.Â
