St. Cloud State baseball gains important NSIC victories over Minot State

In their first home games of the 2018 season, the Huskies held on to fourth place in the league standings with the two wins and more importantly gained key regional wins as SCSU was ranked eighth in the first NCAA DII Central Region poll released on Apr. 25. The top eight teams ranked in the region will advance to the NCAA DII tournament. Â

Central Missouri led the poll, while Augustna was second followed in order by Central Oklahoma, Pittsburg State, Arkansas Monticello, Southern Arkansas, Minnesota State Mankato and SCSU.
In game one vs. Minot, the Huskies fell behind early as the Beavers led off the game with a home run and added one more in the first to make it 2-0. The Huskies managed to tie it with two runs in the bottom of the first to make it 2-2. Minot State battled back with one run in the third, four in the fourth and one more in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, SCSU started to climb out of the hole with two runs produced by an RBI double from Mat Meyer that scored Jordan Joseph and a sac fly by Jackson Goplen that scored Mitch Mallek. In the sixth inning, SCSU added four runs to tie the score at 8-8. A fielding error on a ball hit by Mallek allowed SCSU's Bo Schmitz, Ethan Ibarra and Caeden Harris to all score. A single by Meyer then allowed Mallek to tie the game heading into the final inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, SCSU sealed the final with a bases loaded single by Joseph that scored Aaron Hammann - that made the final 9-8. On the mound, Kyle Boser was the pitcher of record with 1.0 inning of relief work in the game. Shannon Ahern started the game and pitched 5.2 innings with six strikeouts to his credit. Zach Iten also helped with the relief effort in the victory. Of note, the Huskies outhit Minot 13-10 in the game with Meyer collecting four hits and three RBIs and Joseph adding three hits and two runs. Mallek also tossed in three runs and two hits for the winning side.
In game two, Minot opened once again with a first inning round tripper but the Huskies battled back with four runs in the bottom of the first to set the game's offensive tempo early. SCSU also had one run in the second inning, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh to take an 8-1 lead in the contest. Minot added two runs in the top of the eighth before the Huskies shut the door and brought home the 8-3 final.
In the first inning, Meyer cranked out a two RBI double and that was followed by a two run homer by Goplen that made it 4-1. Harris also had a two run homer in the sixth inning that scored Issac Matchinsky to make it 7-1. In the seventh, SCSU took advantage of another Minot error that allowed Mallek to score the final SCSU run of the day.
In the game, SCSU outhit the Beavers 11-8 as Mallek had three hits and Meyer added two hits in the game. Hammann was the pitcher of record with seven strikeouts and six hits allowed in 7.1 innings pitched. Zach Siggelkow and Iten finished the game for the Huskies in relief.
SCSU will continue its 2018 season on Saturday, April 28 with a 2 p.m. NSIC doubleheader at Bemidji State. SCSU will then return to St. Cloud for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. against Bemidji State on Sunday, April 29. This will be the final regular season game at home for the Huskies and it has been designated as Senior Day, Family Day, Alumni Day and Fan Appreciation Day at the MAC.
