GAMEDAY PREVIEW | Huskies Hit the Road to Face Off Against #20 Augustana

St. Cloud State is set to play their seventh and eighth consecutive games in Sioux Falls.
Sioux Falls, SD – The St. Cloud State baseball team (15-8, 8-3 NSIC) travels to Sioux Falls once again to take on the NSIC leading and 20th nationally ranked, Augustana College Vikings (24-1, 11-1 NSIC) at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
SERIES PREVIEW
The Huskies currently sit fourth in the conference standings after winning four of their last six games last week. SCSU started last week with a mid-week sweep over Northern State and a series split with the Sioux Falls Cougars.
SCSU recorded the second most homeruns in a game (7) in all of college baseball in the second game of their series against Northern State last weekend.
As a team, St. Cloud State enters the week leading the conference in batting average (.334), RBI's, (179) and walks (103). The Huskies' pitching staff has combined for a 4.25 ERA which puts them at the fourth lowest in the conference.
Augustana trails the Huskies for the second highest team batting average in the conference (.333) and leads the NSIC in team ERA.
Augustana's sole loss of the season came in mid-march against the Northern State Wolves by a score of 7-3. The Vikings are currently on a 13-game winning streak and are coming off of their fifth consecutive NSIC series win after sweeping Upper Iowa and Bemidji State last week.
SCOUTING AUGUSTANA
The Vikings are traditionally very strong in all facets of the game, but specialize in catching teams off guard with their running game.
Augie has stolen 74 bases thus far, which is the most in the NSIC and sixth most in Division II baseball. Augustana averages 2.92 stolen bags per game, which is the fifth most in the nation.
Michael Svozil (16), Riley Johnson (12), Sam Baier (11) and Ryan Nickel (9) are pacing the NSIC in stolen bases, with Svozil, Johnson and Nickel holding the top three spots.
On top of Johnson's 12 stolen bags, he has scored the second most runs (27) and hits (42) in the conference as well.
Augie's Jordan Barth and Sam Baier and neck and neck for the most RBI's in the conference, with Barth's 32 RBI's edging Baier's 30.
Barth and Baier are also battling one another for the lead in homeruns, with Baier holding the lead for six while Barth has logged four.
Leading the conference's most efficient pitching staff are Jacob Blank, David Flattery and Jed Schmidt. Blank has fanned the second most batters in the NSIC with 45 while holding a 2.48 ERA over 32.2 innings pitched. In 2017, the senior was named the NSIC, NCBWA Regional and National Pitcher of the Year after going 10-0 with a 0.78 ERA in 69 innings pitched.

Last season, the Huskies swept Augustana in a mid-week series played at Joe Faber Field. SCSU won 10-4, and 5-4 in games where Cal Giese and Miles Nablo picked up wins for the St. Cloud State. The Huskies walked off the Vikings in the bottom of the 11th in the series-deciding game off of a wild pitch where Aaron Hammann recorded the game-winning run.
After the mid-week series, SCSU and Augie met once again in the NSIC Tournament where the Huskies emerged victorious in a 3-2 thriller where Kyle Boser picked up the win in relief. Starting the game for SCSU was Cal Giese where he allowed two runs on two hits in six innings of work, where he also struck out eight batters.
Jacob Blank started for Augie in the conference tournament, where he did not allow an earned in 6.2 innings. Blank allowed four hits and one walk while hitting two Huskies and striking out five.
Over the past five seasons, the Huskies are 13-7 in NSIC conference and tournament play against the Vikings. SCSU has won two series, split two series, and split once against Augie during the regular season of the five-year span.
The Huskies are 5-1 in tournament play against Augustana, with their last loss coming in 2014.
