ABERDEEN, S.D. – Last week as a little rough for the St. Cloud State football team. Despite strong play from its defense and sophomore kicker Adam Stage (Appleton, Wis. / Kimberly), the Huskies fell to No. 16 the University of Minnesota-Duluth Thursday night 41-17. This weekend, St. Cloud State looks to rebound with a win over Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foe Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Both the Huskies and Wolves are coming off tough losses in week three of the 2018 season. While St. Cloud State fell to the Bulldogs 41-17, Northern State lost to Minnesota-State Moorhead by a similar score of 42-28.
Fans who can't make the trek to Aberdeen, South Dakota for the 1 p.m. kickoff can follow along online via live stats, video and WJON's live radio broadcast. Score updates can also be found on the Huskies official Twitter account (@scsuhuskiesfb).
Here are the five things to know before kickoff Saturday:
17 – The Huskies scored 17 points against the Minnesota-Duluth defense last Thursday, the most points scored against the No. 16 team by any team this season. Until Thursday, the Bulldogs had surrendered a grand total of 10 combined points against NSIC opponents while holding opponents to under an average of 175 all-purpose yards/game.
40 – Despite the loss, St. Cloud State's defense still held strong through the majority of the game, as it held Minnesota-Duluth to 27 first half points and under 200 yards rushing for the first time all season. In fact, no single Bulldog rusher tallied more than 40 net yards rushing, a season low. Jack Horter (Sussex, Wis. / Marquette), Matthew Lechner (Waukesha, Wis. / Catholic Memorial) and Packer Buckley (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake) led the charge with six tackles a piece, while Horter also recorded 1.5 tackles for a combined loss of five yards.
21-16 – The Huskies nearly had the comeback of the season last year in their 21-16 loss to Northern State. The Wolves managed to score 21 unanswered points in the first quarter to take a seemingly definitive 21-0 lead over St. Cloud State. However, the Huskies certainly weren't down, as they slowly chipped away at Northern State's lead, cutting it down to 21-7 at the half. However, St. Cloud State's second half surge wasn't enough, as the Huskies fell by a final score of 21-16.
295.7 – Despite their 1-2 record this season, the Wolves have been one of the top passing teams in the NSIC in 2018. Through three games, Northern State has averaged 295.7 passing yards/game, which ranks third in the conference behind Upper Iowa (317.3) and Augustana (308.7). On the flip side, St. Cloud State has had one of the best passing defenses in the league. The Huskies have held opponents to an average of 206.0 passing yards per game, the fifth lowest average in the conference.
3/11 – In addition to its defense, St. Cloud State has two of the top receivers in the conference in John Solberg (Cambridge, Minn. / Cambridge-Isanti) and John Pass (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove). The two Johns rank third and eleventh in the NSIC respectively in passing yards/game and rank sixth and tenth in receptions per game this season. Solberg currently is averaging 99.7 yards/game on six receptions, while Pass averages 75 yards per game.
