Volleyball looks for second NSIC win at BSU

BEMIDJI, MINN. – It was the start of the 2018 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) season the St. Cloud State volleyball team was looking for. The Huskies completely dominated in their home and conference opener against the University of Minnesota-Crookston Thursday night, quickly defeating the Golden Eagles in three sets 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-16).
On Saturday, St. Cloud State (5-2, 1-0 NSIC) looks to keep the good times rolling with a 1 p.m. match against Bemidji State University (3-6, 0-1 NSIC). It will be the Huskies first road test of the season against an NSIC opponent, as they opened the conference season in the comforts of Halenbeck Hall Thursday evening.
The game is significant for both St. Cloud State and Bemidji, as the teams will be wearing gold laces as part of the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer movement. The Beavers will be taking donations for the organization during the match, one-hundred percent of which will go to helping kids and their families who have been impacted by cancer.

Here are the five things to know before Saturday's match between St. Cloud State and Bemidji State:
68 – This will be the 68th meeting between the Huskies and Beavers, with St. Cloud State holding a 45-22 all-time record against Bemidji State. In fact, in the Huskies have won four of their last five meetings, including last year's 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-11, 25-23) victory in Halenbeck Hall, and head coach Chad Braeglemann is 4-1 all-time against the Beavers.
1st – St. Cloud State may only be seven games into the season, but the Huskies currently lead the NSIC in one statistical category and rank in the top-half of the conference in nine different categories. At this moment in time, St. Cloud State leads the conference in opponents blocks per set, as the Huskies have hit into just one block per set on average this season, making them one of the most efficient offensive teams in the league.
8 – In addition to leading the NSIC in one category, St. Cloud State ranks in the top-8 in eight other categories as well. Currently, the team is tied for eighth in the conference in terms of opponent hitting percentage, as the Huskies have held their opponents to a .166 attack percentage through the first seven games of the season. On the flip side, St. Cloud State currently ranks sixth in the conference in team hitting percentage, as the team has accumulated a .249 percentage against teams so far this season. The Huskies also rank eighth in assists/set (12.29), fourth in opponent assists (9.88), seventh in kills/set (13.42) and third in opponent kills/set (10.46).
15 – St. Cloud State held Minnesota-Crookston to just 15 kills in its 3-0 victory Thursday night, outing the visitors 40-15 in the home opener. In fact, the Golden Eagles hit -.039 Thursday while the Huskies hit .232 as a team. Abby Templin (Cold Spring, Minn. / ROCORI) led the team with 11-kills on the night, while first year Linsey Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn. / Maple Lake) tallied eight in her home debut.
6 – Bemidji State took on the No. 6 team in the country, Minnesota-Duluth, in its NSIC opener Thursday night, falling to the Bulldogs in straight sets 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-14). The Beavers were led by sophomore Anna Averkamp in the loss, as she tallied 10 kills in the match, the lone player from Bemidji State to tally double-digit kills in the loss.

4 – For every $5 spent on gold laces during a Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer game, $4 goes directly to the families of children suffering from the disease. The organization, started in 2011 as a response to requests from youth soccer teams in New Jersey wanting to show commitment to their fight against pediatric cancer, will also give 100% of the funds raised at Saturday's match to families and children in need.
