GREENWOOD, IND. – The St. Cloud State University football team… On the eve before St. Cloud State's final game of the 2019 season, senior defensive back Ben Gutschow (Amherst, Wis. / Amherst) was named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District Team, as nominated and voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Gutschow is the first Husky to receive the prestigious honor since Carvel Graham earned the honor in 2017 and is doing so thanks to a career season on the field. A senior from Amherst, Wisconsin, Gutschow has maintained a 3.91 grade point average (GPA) while serving as one of St. Cloud State's top defensive backs this season. In 10 games, Gutschow has racked up 41 total tackles, with 28 solo and 13 assists, 1.5 tackles for loss and .5 sacks. Additionally, he's pulled in two interceptions this season, returned one for a touchdown, recorded eight pass breakups and one quarterback hurry.
Gutschow did not just receive the award for his athletic accomplishments. Off the field, the senior has maintained an impressive 3.91 GPA while majoring in bio-medical studies and has earned Academic All-Conference honors twice in his career. As a junior, Gutschow received the prestigious Butch Raymond Scholarship from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and is up for Academic All-Conference honors again this season.
The 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District football team is selected by members of CoSIDA and recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their efforts both on the field and in the classroom. As a first team honoree, Gutschow is an automatic finalist for Academic All-America honors, which recognizes a select number of student-athlete across all three NCAA Divisions plus the NAIA. Academic All-America honorees will be announced in early December.
