ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball has always been hard to beat in Halenbeck Hall. Thursday evening, the Huskies demonstrated how that trend is not about to change. After a disappointing loss to Minnesota State last weekend, St. Cloud State rebounded with another big home win, this time by a score of INSERT FINAL SCORE HERE over visiting Waldorf University.
The Huskies, particularly Andrija Blatancic (Bergen, Norway / Academy of Arts), were on fire to open the game, as they wasted no time jumping out to an early 8-2 lead. In fact, it was Blatancic who scored all four baskets for St. Cloud State, improving his already impressive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) leading shooting numbers.
The rest of the team followed suite, as the Huskies held a comfortable 36-18 lead at the first media time out with roughly nine minutes remaining in the half. Sixteen points and nine minutes later, St. Cloud State walked into the locker room holding a 52-30 advantage over the visiting Warriors. Four different Huskies scored double-digits in the opening half, led by first year Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington), who came off the bench to score a team-leading 11 first half points. Blantancic, Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park) and Ethan Schuemer (Lombard, Ill. / Willowbrook) all closed the half with 10 points of their own, while Schuemer led the way with seven first half rebounds.
St. Cloud State only continued to add to its lead in the second half, as team jumped to a 77-59 with roughly 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The Huskies also played stellar defense, as they only allowed two Warriors to score for the majority of the half. In fact, only Demitrius Martin and Quincy Minor Jr scored through the first 30 minutes of play before another player from Waldorf scored a basket.
The important part was that the Warriors did not score enough baskets, as St. Cloud State cruised to a 93-67 win over Waldorf. As in the first half, the Huskies strong scoring efforts continued in the second, as Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) scored 16 second half points to finish the game with a team-leading 18 points. Blatancic was perfect from the floor, as he scored 16 points on perfect 8-8 shooting, while Schuemer was one rebound shy of a double-double, concluding the game with a career-high 16 points and nine rebounds.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 2-3, and the team is currently perfect at home with a 2-0 record in Halenbeck Hall. Saturday, the Huskies will put their pristine home record on the line, as they host Dakota Wesleyan University at 4 p.m. in the final nonconference game of the 2019-20 season.
