
#4 St. Cloud State Sweeps Winona State 17-6 and 2-0, Improves to 16-3

The Huskies recorded their second consecutive NSIC series victory on Thursday
MAUSTON, Wis. - The #4 St. Cloud State baseball team (16-3, 4-1 NSIC) picked up their second straight NSIC series victory after sweeping the Winona State Warriors in a mid-week double-header on Thursday, March 21st at the Woodside Sports Complex. The Huskies defeated Winona State 17-6 in the first game, then 2-0 in game two. SCSU improves to 4-1 in conference play while the Warriors fall to 2-3.Â
GAME ONE, #4 SCSU 17 | WSU 6
The Huskies and Warriors traded punches early in the ball game with WSU taking a 3-1 lead in the first before SCSU responded with an eight-run second inning to lead 9-4. After a scoreless third inning, Winona State put up two in the fourth to decrease their deficit to three. St. Cloud State would then post a two-run fifth and consecutive three-run innings to take game one of the series 17-6.
SCSU's bullpen showed strong in the game one victory, only allowing three hits over 3 2/3 scoreless frames between Shannon Ahern, Zach Siggelkow and Zach Iten. Matt Osterberg gave the Huskies 3 1/3 innings in his third start of the season, while Ahern improved to 1-1 on the year as the pitcher of record for SCSU.Â
Mitch Mallek led the way at the plate with 3 RBI's after going 4-5 and two runs scored. Mathew Meyer, Jordan Joseph, Toran Shahidi, Dylan Haskamp and Ethan Ibarra each recored two RBI's while Ibarra finished 3-3 with three runs scored as well.Â
As a team, SCSU combined for 18 hits while drawing 11 walks and left nine runners on base.Â
GAME TWO, #4 SCSU 2 | WSU 0
Behind a stellar start from Cal Giese (1-1) and four scoreless frames in relief from Matt Butler, the Huskies were able to shutout the Warrirors in the series finale. SCSU took a 1-0 lead after Jordan Joseph scored on a passed ball, then Mitch Mallek's solo shot in the sixth inning gave the Huskies their 2-0 lead.Â
Giese struck out five while only allowing two hits in his five innings of work. Butler picked up his third save of the year, striking out two and only allowing one hit over four innings.Â
SCSU out-hit WSU 4-3 while only leaving two men on base in the victory.Â
St. Cloud State returns to action March 23-24 against the University of Sioux Falls, in Sioux Falls, S.D.Â
