The Huskies own a 2-0 lead in the series heading into Sunday's finale.
GAME ONE, #4 SCSU 12 | USF 7
The Huskies proved to be persistent in their early scoring efforts against the Cougars, loading the bases with under two outs in each of the first four innings, while also posting two runs in each of the first four innings.
USF responded with a solo shot in the first inning, and scratched across one more in the second before making it a three run ballgame in the fourth after a three-run homerun from Ryan Bernardy. SCSU held a 9-6 lead until the sixth when Najee Gaskins scored on a fielding error.Â
The Huskies would break things open in the seventh courtesy of a triple from Toran Shahidi that scored Mitch Mallek, then a single from Dylan Haskamp scored Shahidi to put SCSU up 12-6. The Cougars added one more in their half of the seventh, but SCSU would hold on for a 12-7 victory in game one.
Dominic Austing struck out five in his three innings of work for SCSU while Riley Ahern (2-0) would earn the decision for SCSU after tossing four innings in relief and only allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out nine.Â
Mathew Meyer, Jordan Joseph and Toran Shahidi each recorded three hits while Shahidi and Hammann tallied three RBI's in the game one victory.Â
GAME TWO, #4 SCSU 15 | USF 0
St. Cloud State would strike first once again and not look back in game two of the series. Jumping out to a 7-0 lead after three innings, the Huskies would end the game in seven innings after adding three more between the fourth and fifth innings, then a five-run sixth would give SCSU their 15-0 advantage.Â
The damage started in the first inning after Jordan Joseph doubled home Mitch Mallek and Lenny Walker, then Joseph would score the third run of the inning to take a 3-0 lead.Â
A two-run shot from Jordan Joseph in the third would give SCSU a 5-0 lead, then Shahidi and Haskamp would each record RBI doubles to put the Huskies up seven after three.Â
Najee Gaskins picked up a 2 RBI double in the fourth, then Mallek singled home Hammann in the fifth to give SCSU a ten run lead.
SCSU's five-run sixth inning consisted of a RBI single from Lenny Walker, a sac-fly RBI from Meyer, a pair of RBI singles from Gaskins and Joseph, then Caeden Harris drew a bases-loaded walk that put SCSU up 15-0.Â
Lenny Walker, Jordan Joseph and Najee Gaskins each finished with three hits while Joseph racked up five RBI's. Gaskins posted three while Walker, Meyer, Mallek, Shahidi and Harris each picked up one.Â
Blake Flint (3-0) gave the Huskies another outstanding start, striking out eight, walking none and tossing 4 2/3 perfect innings to start the game. Flint was relieved by Trevor Koenig, who picked up six strikeouts in his two innings of work.Â
St. Cloud State and Sioux Falls will play their series finale on Sunday, March 24 at 5 PM.Â
