The #4 St. Cloud State University baseball team improved to 34-9 overall and 22-7 in the always rugged NSIC with a clutch 6-0 win over visiting Northern State University on Saturday, April 27 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory capped a special day for the Huskies as they saluted their outstanding senior class of student-athletes, which have helped SCSU win over 147 games over the past four seasons and gain three consecutive NCAA tournament bids along with a current #4 national ranking in 2019. The SCSU seniors were highlighed with between period introductions and a special post-game ceremony before the fans gathered at Joe Faber Field.
On the field, SCSU and Northern State battled through six scoreless innings in a classic defensive showdown. SCSU starting pitcher Shannon Ahern pitched those first six innings with eight strikeouts to his credit with five hits, one walk and no runs allowed. Â
In the seventh inning, the Huskies broke through with the game winning run scored by Toran Shahidi off of a single by Lenny Walker that made it 1-0. The run would prove to be all SCSU needed to gain the victory as Dylan Haskamp came in to pitch two more scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth to earn his first win. Kyle Boser finished the game in the ninth for the Huskies with one inning of relief work.
SCSU extended its lead in the eighth inning with five runs to make the final 6-0. Mat Meyer scored the first run in the eighth followed by a double by Aaron Hammann, which scored Caeden Harris. Hammann was then brought home on a single by Ethan Ibarra and Walker added a two RBI double that scored Matthew Quade and Ibarra.
On the day, SCSU outhit NSU 13-6.
