ST. CLOUD, MINN. – It was no secret during the 2018-19 season that St. Cloud State University men's basketball players Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook) and Sean Smith (Barcelona, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy) were just a little good at basketball. On Friday, both former Huskies became professional basketball players, as Davis signed a two year contract with Germany's Basketball Löwen Braunschweig, while Smith signed a pro contract with Spain's Club Básquet Coruña, also known as Leyma Básquet Coruña
"We are very excited for and proud of Gage and Sean," St. Cloud State head coach Matt Reimer said in a statement. "They've both worked very hard for this and we look forward to watching their pro careers."
Davis was a standout student- athlete during his time with the Huskies, as he earned multiple accolades, including NSIC Freshman and Player of the Year honors. In his final season with St. Cloud State, Davis played and started in all 31 games for the Huskies, scoring a school-record 807 points with 234 rebounds, 103 assists, 43 steals and 24 blocks to his name during the season. He earned multiple postseason honors and awards including NSIC Player of the Year, First Team All-NSIC, First Team All-Region (D2CCA), First Team All-District (NABC) and multiple All-America honors. Davis was voted a Second Team All-American by Basketball Times, Third Team All-American by D2CCA and a First Team All-American by the NABC. He was a finalist for Division II Player of the Year by multiple publications and was selected to play in the Division II All-Star Game, where he led both teams in scoring.
Statistically, Davis graduated holding 12 different school records, three NSIC records and one state record, as he became St. Cloud State, the NSIC and the state of Minnesota's all-time leading scorer during the 2018-19 season. He averaged a school record 26.0 points per game as a senior and scored 20+ points in all but seven of the Huskies contests during the season.
"I am very proud of Gage," commented Reimer. "This is the first step in what we hope is a long professional basketball career."
Smith was a standout athlete in his two years with the Huskies, earning All-Conference honors both his junior and senior season. As a senior in 2018-19, Smith was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Defensive Player of the Year after leading the conference in blocks, blocks per game and defensive rebounds against conference opponents.
