Freshman Emma Gentry scored her first collegiate goal in overtime to propel St. Cloud State (2-3-0, 2-3-0 WCHA) to a 3-2 victory over Bemidji State (0-1-0, 0-1-0 WCHA) on Thursday evening. The Huskies outshot Bemidji State 30-29 in the game and earned two points with the overtime win.
Taylor Lind opened the scoring for St. Cloud State with a wicked wrister from the slot at the 9:49 mark of the first period, catching a loose puck and sending it top shelf stick side. SCSU outshot Bemidji State 17-12 in the first period.
BSU's Lydia Passolt tied things up at 10:35 in the second. Early in the third period, Klara Hymlarova found Jenniina Nylund crashing to the slot and the latter fired her second goal of the season past the Beavers netminder, putting the Huskies up by a 2-1 score with just over 16 minutes to play. Bemidji State answered with a Clair DeGeorge goal with 12:35 to go.
Knotted at two headed into overtime, the Huskies and Beavers battled back and forth until Nylund led a two-on-one rush with Gentry, zipping a pass to the left circle where the freshman caught it and hammered it home through the five-hole at the 2:23 mark to clinch the OT victory.
Huskies goaltender Emma Polusny made 27 saves to earn her first win of the season. Hymlarova (71.4%) and Olivia Cvar (52.9%) each posted dominant faceoff efforts, while Gentry and Nylund posted a pair of two-point nights. The Huskies played an extremely clean game, going on the penalty kill just once and holding Bemidji State scoreless on their lone chance.
SCSU and Bemidji State wrap up their two-game series at the Sanford Center Friday at 3:07 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast live both on FloHockey and 97.5 FM RadioX.
