JOPLIN, MISSOURI – The St. Cloud State University baseball team left the state of Missouri as winners Monday afternoon. The Huskies earned their third victory of the season in shutout fashion, as they dominated both at the plate and on the bump in their 6-0 win over Missouri Western State University, closing the MIAA/GLVC crossover with a 3-1 overall record.
St. Cloud State started scoring early and often, as the team put its first run on the board in the top of the first inning. Junior Jake Shusterich (Nipomo, California / Arroyo Grande) hit a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Josh Hill (Avondale, Ariz. / Tolleson Union) and John Nett (Appleton, Wis. / Kimberly) to score from second and third, giving the Huskies and early 2-0 lead.
St. Cloud State scored again in the third, fifth and seventh innings, extending its lead to 6-0 thanks to two solo home runs by Shusterich, a sacrifice fly by Matt Quade (Paynesville, Minn. / Paynesville) and an RBI single from Drew Bulson (St. Cloud, Minn. / St. Cloud Tech). A 1-0 lead would have been enough for Riley Ahern (Iver Grove Heights, Minn. / Academy of Holy Angels) and company, as five pitchers threw nine shutout innings, helping the younger Ahern earn his first "W" of the 2020 season.
Nett and Shusterich were the top hitters for the Huskies Monday afternoon, as they combined for six hits, three runs and three RBI against the Griffons. Nett went 3-4 in the game with a run a walk, while Shusterich accounted for three of the five RBIs in the game thanks to his 2-4 day, which included two solo home runs for the newcomer.
As aforementioned, Ahern earned his first win of the season, as he threw a nearly flawless game from the mound. In five innings of work, Ahern did not give up a single run to Missouri Western, allowing just three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Coming in relief to preserve the shutout were Avery Stevens (Sleepy Eye, Minn. / Sleepy Eye), Jack Habeck (Appleton, Wis. / Appleton East), George Loxtercamp (Bemidji, Minn. / Bemidji) and Noah Soltero (North Las Vegas, Nev. / Shadow Ridge), who combined allowed just one hit and two additional base runners in four innings of work.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 3-1. The team will return to action on February 25 when it faces Northern State University in a nonconference doubleheader at U.S. Bank Stadium. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
