St. Cloud State (7-7, 5-4 NSIC) lefthander Trevor Koenig pitched a masterful eight-inning gem but couldn't get much help from his lineup as the Huskies fell 3-2 to No. 19 Minnesota State in Saturday's series finale.
"We played another very solid college baseball game," said head coach Pat Dolan, "And you have to give Mankato credit just like the majority of other close tough one-run losses so far this year."
With their third one-run loss in conference play, the Huskies drop the weekend series two games to one, falling back to .500 on the young season.
"I told the guys we are on paper a .500 team," Dolan continued, "But we are the farthest thing from a .500 team. We have played a tough portion of our conference schedule and not that it lights up that much but I think by the end of the year you'll see us right in the mix of things."
Koenig picked apart the Mavericks lineup, working 8.0 frames of seven-hit, three-walk baseball with nine strikeouts and just two earned runs on his line. The southpaw was forced into a handful of jams as SCSU committed four errors but managed to limit the damage by leaning on his stuff.
St. Cloud State opened the scoring in the bottom of the third as John Nett (3-for-4, R, 2B, 3B, RBI) led off with a triple down the rightfield line and crossed home on a Max Gamm (0-for-1, 2 BB, RBI, SH, SB) groundout.
Minnesota State took the lead with a two-run fifth. Tate Wallat (1-for-4, R) began the home half by roping a single to right, then moved to second on a Kyle Rodriguez (0-for-1, SH) sacrifice bunt. Nett blasted a double to right, plating Wallat and tying the game at two.
Presented with a bases-loaded, none-out situation in the sixth, Koenig struck out the side to keep the game knotted at two.
MSU scored an unearned run in the eighth on a two-out error, giving the Mavericks their decisive 3-2 lead.
Nick Brauns worked the ninth for SCSU, retiring the side on five pitches with a ground-ball double play induced to end the inning.
St. Cloud State is next scheduled to play a two-game midweek series against Winona State at home on Wednesday, April 7 at Joe Faber Field. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CST. The series will be broadcast on the NSIC Network with Live Stats provided by SCSU.
