SCSU and Winona State have met 144 times since their all-time series began in 1938, with the Warriors holding a slight 74-70 advantage. The Huskies have won six of the last seven meetings and haven't lost a series to Winona State since the Warriors' 2011 NCAA DII College World Series season. Scouting the Huskies
St. Cloud State enters the midweek alone in eighth place in the NSIC standings following a 2-1 weekend series loss to conference leader No. 19 Minnesota State-Mankato. Despite their 7-7 overall record, the Huskies own a massive plus-45 run differential and have gone an unlucky 1-4 in one-run games. SCSU's .324 team average ranks second among conference foes while their 27 home runs, .412 on-base percentage and .563 slugging rank fourth. The Huskies' pitching numbers have drastically improved in conference play, as in NSIC action SCSU owns the best ERA in the league at 3.26.
Centerfielder John Nett has put together a fantastic start to his second season with the Huskies, slashing .392/.515/.667 for a 1.182 OPS with 21 runs scored, three doubles, a triple, three homers and five steals. First baseman Jake Shusterich (.333/.439/.622, 4 2B, 3 HR, 12 RBI), catcher/designated hitter Caleb Marquez (.342/.458/.737, 3 2B, 4 HR, 17 RBI) and rightfielder Matt Quade (.391/.442/.696, 3B, 4 HR, 17 RBI) have combined to form one of the most potent middle-of-the-orders in the NSIC, while infielder Max Gamm (.352/.426/.481, 4 2B, HR, 8 SB) and leftfielder Paul Steffensen (.809 OPS, 3 HR, 11 RBI, 4 SB) help Nett set the table at the top of the order.
The Huskies' probable starters against Winona State are lefthanders Jack Habeck and Luke Tupy. Habeck will be making his first collegiate start on Tuesday having not allowed a run in four conference relief appearances spanning 10.1 innings, striking out nine and walking three with an obscene .059 batting average against. The southpaw has won three games out of the pen and owns a 1.88 ERA on the season. Luke Tupy has made three starts, going 1-0 with a 4.35 ERA over 10.1 frames with 14 strikeouts and a .229 opponent average. Scouting the Warriors
Winona State finds themselves just a few games out of the postseason mix at the moment, sitting tenth in the standings with a 6-7 NSIC record. The Warriors were swept handily by Northern State last weekend, being outscored 24-5 across the three-game set in Aberdeen. In two midweek series played during the young 2021 season, WSU has gone 3-1 over their tilts with Bemidji State and U-Mary.
Longtime Winona State first baseman Sam Kohnle highlights the lineup, having reached the 200 career hit mark last weekend while sitting seventh in the NSIC batting title race with a .406 average to go with five doubles and 15 RBI. Catcher Derek Baumgartner is the lone Warrior OPS'ing over 1.000, slashing .345/.463/.600 with a double, two triples and three home runs. Defensively, Baumgartner has thrown out an impressive 33.3% of attempted steals but has committed 12 passed balls. Third baseman Tanner Williams (.314/.360/.443, 6 2B, HR, 11 RBI), outfielder Nick Herbst (.314/.400/.431) and shortstop Derek Martin (.304/.429/.413, 5 2B) round out the WSU position players hitting better than .300.Â
On the mound, Winona State's midweek starters Cameron Kramer and Bailey Banaszynski have turned in impressive openings to the 2021 campaign. Kramer has appeared in four games and has made two midweek starts, working 17.2 frames to the tune of a 3.57 ERA with 14 strikeouts and a 1-0 record. The 6'7 righthander has limited opponents to a .224 average and has walked just three batters. Fellow righthander Banaszynski is 2-1 over five appearances and three starts, posting a 4.09 ERA across 22.0 innings with an outstanding 32:3 K:BB ratio and a .230 batting average against. Warriors closer Nicolas Herold has worked five scoreless appearances this season, including two perfect innings at Northern State last weekend with five strikeouts, but control issues (five walks in 7.0 innings) have saddled him with a 9.00 ERA. The righthander has still been able to utilize his fantastic stuff, striking out 15 in 7.0 frames while limiting batters to a .192 average. Righty Justin Firpo joins Herold as WSU relievers with eight appearances on the season, striking out 17 over 14.0 frames but holds a 7.71 ERA thanks to 16 hits and seven walks allowed.
