St. Cloud State (8-7, 6-4 NSIC) lefthander Jack Habeck was nails through 5.2 near-perfect innings of work in an 8-3 game one win over Winona State (9-10, 6-8 NSIC) in Tuesday's midweek doubleheader. Habeck allowed just two hits and walked none while striking out three in his first collegiate start to earn his fourth win of the season.
The Huskies opened things up in the home half of the first as Max Gamm (1-for-3, BB, R, RBI, SB) reached on a one-out walk and stole second. Paul Steffensen (2-for-3, BB, R, 3 SB) singled through the right side to put runners on the corners. Steffensen took off for second on the next pitch but Winona State's catcher threw the ball into left field, allowing Gamm to cross home. After a Jake Shusterich (2-for-4) infield single, Steffensen stole third and scored courtesy of a Caleb Marquez (1-for-3, RBI) RBI single to right.
SCSU struck again in the fourth, set up by leadoff singles from Lenny Walker (1-for-3, R) and Tate Wallat (3-for-3, 2 R). Kyle Rodriguez (0-for-0, 2 SAC) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both teammates, followed by a John Nett (2-for-3, R, 2 2B, 4 RBI, SAC) double crushed to right, plating the pair. Nett stole third and was brought home by a Gamm single, making it a 5-0 game.
Matt Quade (1-for-4, R) led off the fifth with a single. Two batters later Wallat singled through the hole on the left side, then Tyler Schiller (1-for-1, R, 2B, RBI) roped a pinch-hit RBI double down the rightfield line to score Quade. Nett followed suit with a rocket two-run double, stretching the lead to eight.
Winona State scored three unearned runs in the sixth. Eli Emerson finished things off by striking out two in a scoreless seventh.
Nett's four-RBI day gave him a new career mark in the game-one win.
