Huskies put up nine runs in final three innings to earn 11-2 win in second game of doubleheader
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – St. Cloud State Baseball (9-7, 1-1 NSIC) began a critical weekend series to open conference play against Augustana (11-4-1, NSIC 1-1 NSIC) with a doubleheader split. After dropping game one, the Huskies were able to force a split in the Saturday double header and send the series to a decider on Sunday.
Game One: Augustana 5, St. Cloud State 2
The series opener saw the bats go quiet for St. Cloud State, as Augustana rode their opening day starter Tanner Brown to the finish. He finished with a complete game, holding the Huskies to only three hits on the afternoon. Huskies' starter redshirt junior Riley Ahern (5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, BB, 4 K's) worked hard to get through five innings and kept St. Cloud in the hunt. Three out of the four runs he gave up were unearned.
Redshirt sophomore John Nett (1-for-3, R) had the first hit of the day for SCSU in the sixth inning and was driven in by redshirt junior Sam Riola (1-for-3, RBI) for the second run of the game. The Huskies made it 3-1 in the fifth when Mason Primus (0-for-2, RBI) picked up a sac fly to center sending senior Paul Steffensen (0-for-2, R, HBP) home.
Augustana matched each run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to lead 5-2 heading into the final inning. Huskies got a man board, but Brown was too good in game one.
Game Two: St. Cloud State 11, Augustana 2
Redshirt freshman Luke Tupy (6.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 8 K's) was back on the bump and spectacular once again, holding the Vikings to one run through five innings. Another sacrifice fly got the Huskies on the board thanks to redshirt junior Drew Bulson (1-for-4, RBI) plating Steffensen (1-for-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB) for a 1-0 lead. The Vikings first two hits were back-to-back doubles in the fourth to tie it at one.
Once again, SCSU did not get their first hit until Nett (2-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI) singled in the sixth followed by a perfectly executed hit-and-run with redshirt sophomore Tate Wallat (2-for-5, R, 2B, RBI) to put SCSU up 2-1.
That was just the start for the Husky offense, in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings St. Cloud State put up three runs in each. Freshman Ethan Navratil (1-for-4, 2 R, HR (2)) had a solo shot and Nett drove in two runs with two outs to cap off the seventh. The biggest hit of the game was a sophomore Tyler Schiller (2-for-4, R, 2B, 3 RBI) bases clearing double to give the Huskies a commanding 8-2 lead. The three runs in the final inning were insurance for SCSU while senior Fabian Villegas (2.0, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's) shut down Augustana in the final two innings.
QUOTABLES
Redshirt sophomore John Nett
"I think you could see in game one we had a little bit of conference game jitters, but once we calmed down and started gaining some momentum in game two it all came together. We have to take the effort we saw in this one (game two) and carry that into tomorrow's finale."
