Gamm steals five bases over two games, Anderson gets first collegiate win, Emerson records first collegiate save
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball (20-10, 12-4 NSIC) won both games of their midweek doubleheader against Upper Iowa (8-21, 6-12 NSIC) on Tuesday afternoon. On a chilly day at Joe Faber Field offense was going to come at premium for both sides. The Huskies had to come-from-behind to win in both games, earning a 3-2 win in extra innings in game one, followed by a convincing 6-2 win to complete the sweep.
Game One: St. Cloud State 3, Upper Iowa 2 (8 innings)
St. Cloud State sent redshirt junior Sam Riola (3.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's) to the mound for his first start of the season. He faced the minimum through two innings but found himself in trouble in the third. Riola committed a throwing error on a groundball back to the mound trying to turn a double play putting runners on the corners for Upper Iowa. Two singles later from the Peacocks drove in a couple of runs to take a 2-0 lead.
The score would stay there until the bottom of the fifth when senior Max Gamm (2-for-3, R, 3 SB) and redshirt sophomore John Nett (0-for-4, R, ROE) reached a board. Nett took off for second when Peacocks starter Colin Lacey threw over to first, eventually a throw was made to second allowing Gamm at third to head for home plate. Gamm would slide in safely at home for the first run of the ballgame to cut the lead in a half. Moments later a pass ball saw Nett taking home as well and tie the game at 2-2.
Redshirt sophomore Jack Habeck (5.0 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's) was spectacular in relief for the Huskies keeping the Peacocks off the board his entire appearance. Eventually the game would go to extras and St. Cloud had their chance to win the game in the bottom of the eight. Freshman Ethan Navratil (2-for-4, RBI) was the hero for St. Cloud State when he singled down the first base line driving in senior Paul Steffensen (1-for-4, R) for the walk-off 3-2 win.
Huskies Infielder Ethan Navratil
"I was just trying to a hit a single, wasn't trying to do too much. Wanted to put the ball in play and put pressure on the defense and thankfully it hit off the base and popped up in the air for me," said Navratil on his approach in his last at-bat.
Game Two: St. Cloud State 6, Upper Iowa 2
Game two saw SCSU jump out to a 1-0 start when Nett (3-for-3, 3 R, 2 2B, RBI, BB) scored on a sacrifice fly from Riola (0-for-1, Sac Fly, 2 BB, RBI). Redshirt sophomore Tommy Thompson (4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K's) started the game for St. Cloud State and like Riola and game one had no issues until the middle innings.
Upper Iowa continued to battle at the plate and was able to scrap together a run in the top of the third and fourth to take a 2-1 lead. In order for the Huskies to complete the sweep they would have to come from behind again. St. Cloud State responded in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded walk by Riola to tie the game. One pitch later, Steffensen's (1-for-3, Sac Fly, RBI) sacrifice fly scored Nett and SCSU had a 3-2 lead.
The Huskies would add insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, Gamm (0-for-1, Sac Fly, RBI) pushed a run across on a sacrifice fly. Then, Nett doubled for the second time in the game driving in redshirt junior Tyler Schiller (1-for-3, R), followed by redshirt sophomore Tate Wallat's (2-for-3, 2B, RBI, BB) to make it a 6-2 Huskies lead heading to the final inning.
Redshirt sophomore Eli Emerson (2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, K) closed the game out for St. Cloud State to earn his first career save, while freshman Owen Anderson (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB) got his first collegiate win in the 6-2 sweep of Upper Iowa.
