Huskies extend win streak to 13 with 11-4 and 14-7 wins over the Beavers
Game One: Huskies 11, Beavers 4
The Huskies struck in the top of the first when senior Paul Steffensen (1-for-4, R, 2-Run HR) homered to left giving a SCSU an early 2-0 advantage. The Beavers would get one back in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to one. Redshirt sophomore Jack Habeck (6.0 IP, 4 H, R, 2 BB, 5 K's) got himself in plenty of trouble but got himself out of jams early. He induced two inning-ending double plays in the first and second to keep the Beavers off the board in critical situations.
That gave enough time for the offense to awaken, as redshirt junior Sam Riola (1-for-1, 3 R, 3B, 3 BB, RBI) smoked a triple off the wall in deep center to score redshirt sophomore Tate Wallat (1-for-2, 2 R, RBI, BB) from first. The 3-1 lead doubled after redshirt sophomore Drew Bulson (2-for-2, R, 2-Run HR) capped off a three run fifth with his sixth home run of season.
St. Cloud State added five more runs in the top of the seventh for insurance and Bemidji State responded with three of their own. However, it wasn't enough and Habeck picked up his fourth win of the season in a 11-4 win for the Huskies.
Game Two: Huskies 14, Beavers 7
The Huskies carried the momentum from the end of game one and continued to put on a show to start the second. Bulson (1-for-4, R, 3 RBI, 2 BB) singled with the bases loaded in the first to put SCSU up 3-0 early. Like game one BSU was able to respond with two runs of their own to cut the lead to one. St. Cloud State punched back with a nine-run inning to take a commanding 12-2 lead. Riola (2-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, 2 SB) started the scoring with an RBI double. Sophomore Tyler Schiller (2-for-4, R, 2B, 3 RBI, BB) doubled with the bases loaded plating two while redshirt sophomore John Nett (1-for-3, 2 R, RBI, 3 BB) walked with them loaded as well.
Senior Tommy Thompson (4.0 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 3 BB, 4 K's) made his fifth start of the year and was able to fight through four innings before handing the ball to graduate student Shannon Ahern (4.0, H, 0 R, BB, 2 K's). Ahern was deadly out of the bullpen pitching four scoreless innings in efficient fashion earning his first win of the year in a long relief appearance. 14 runs in the first four innings was more than enough to put the Beavers aways in game two completing the weekend sweep of BSU with a 14-7 win.
