Huskies earn critical win over Concordia-St. Paul behind Foley’s 22 kill double-double
ST. CLOUD Minn. – No. 13 St. Cloud State Volleyball (15-6, 8-4 NSIC) handed No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul (18-2, 9-2 NSIC) its second loss of the season on Friday evening at Halenbeck Hall, dropping the Golden Bears in four sets 25-21, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-18. Senior outside hitter Kenzie Foley enjoyed a dominant 22-kill effort, adding 10 digs for a double-double while hitting .326 and scoring a pair of aces with three blocks in the win.
SCSU outhit Concordia-St. Paul .228 to .217 as the Huskies defense outdug their rival 55 to 44. Four Huskies finished in double-figures as junior libero Keely Kurschner led the match with 17 and sophomore setter Emma Berran recorded 11 while Foley and senior defensive specialist Allena Shimon provided 10 each. 11 aces helped punctuate the SCSU defensive effort as strong service work kept CSP out of system throughout the match. Berran led with four aces while Shimon added three and Foley posted a pair.
Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Sam Zimmerman put away 10 kills on .280 hitting while freshman middle blocker Hannah Bruskiewicz posted eight on .312 hitting as the two combined for seven blocks. Berran double-doubled with 41 assists and her 11 digs, adding four aces and a pair of blocks alongside two kills.
QUOTABLES – St. Cloud State head coach Chad Braegelmann
"That was a nice bounce back performance from last week – we had a talk as a team after last week. We haven't had a lot of 0-and-2 weeks lately, and I thought we were especially focused in practice this week – we really worked on serving, and we served really well tonight. Good hand contact, I thought our women were really locked in. We struggled a little bit in serve receive and defensively in those first two sets but the last two we played extremely well, put Concordia in some uncomfortable spots and I think the scores showed that. I'm really proud of the women."
"We talked a little about urgency coming into the week. We have a team that for the most part is extremely young – that can have it advantages, but one of the things that we notice with young teams is they sometimes lack a sense of urgency because they all know they have more time. I thought they did a much better job of that tonight than they have recently."
