Huskies earn 25-15 win over Arkansas Monticello before game three suspended due to darkness
On a day headlined by run production, Huskies starter Riley Ahern earned the win by gutting through 5.0 innings of seven-run ball, scattering nine hits and a walk while striking out nine. Ahern limited damage well and helped save a thin SCSU bullpen.
St. Cloud State scored the game's first run with one away in the first as Riola laced an RBI double into left-center, plating Nett after the latter reached on a game-opening error. Arkansas Monticello responded with two in the home half before the two sides exchanged zeroes in the second.
Nett and Beier opened the third by trading places with back-to-back doubles, tying the game at two. Riola followed with an RBI single then Drew Bulson (2-for-6, BB, 2 R, 2B, 2 RBI) brought home Riola with a run-scoring fielder's choice two batters later. The Huskies loaded the bases later in the inning for Jacobson – the redshirt freshman laid down a beautiful drag bunt to bring home Bulson and stretch the lead to 5-2.
UAM struck back with a pair of runs in the third. Bulson provided the SCSU response a half-inning later, blasting a fly ball to the warning track in right that was mishandled, allowing Beier to score. The Huskies added five runs in the fifth RBI singles courtesy of Jacobson and Beier followed by Riola's first home run of the season – a towering three-run shot out to left-center.
The Boll Weevils got two back in the sixth, cutting the Huskies' lead to 11-9. Ethan Navratil (1-for-6, HBP, 2 R, RBI) singled home Sawyer Smith (0-for-5, 2 BB, R) an inning later, then Jacobson added a two-run double to make it a five run game. Arkansas Monticello responded again with three runs after the stretch. Schiller made sure SCSU kept crooked numbers coming in the eighth, blasting a three-run shot to highlight a six-run frame.
A bases-clearing double off the bat of Nett punctuated a five-run Huskies ninth, putting the game out of reach.
Game two of Sunday's doubleheader was suspended due to darkness in the top of the seventh with St. Cloud State trailing 5-4. The seventh inning will begin at 11:00 a.m. CT on Monday with the series finale to follow the completion of the resumed game.
