A late push in the lowest-scoring game of the series wouldn't be enough as the Huskies dropped to 0-3 in one-run games with a 5-4 loss in game three. Originally started as the second game of Sunday's doubleheader before being halted in the seventh due to darkness, SCSU and Arkansas Monticello picked things back up on Monday morning and played the final three outs.
St. Cloud State struck early in the top of the first as John Nett (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 2B, RBI) cracked a leadoff double and scored two batters later on a double off the bat of Sam Riola (2-for-4, R, 2 2B, RBI). Drew Bulson (2-for-3, BB, RBI, SB) brought Riola home with a two out RBI single, making it 2-0 after one.
Jack Habeck threw the first SCSU complete game of 2023 in the loss, covering 6.0 innings of five-run baseball on 97 pitches while scattering eight hits and two walks. The lefthander struck out eight in a duel with Boll Weevil righthander Connor Irvine, opening his start with three scoreless frames before surrendering two-spots in the fourth and fifth.
Red-hot Brayden Jacobson (2-for-3, R) ripped a one-out single in the top of the sixth to bring the tying run to the plate. Following a strikeout, Nett blasted an RBI double to left then scampered to third on a wild pitch. Drew Beier (1-for-4, RBI) laced a game-tying single into right, scoring Nett and knotting the game at four all.
A two-out RBI single put Arkansas Monticello back in front in the home half before the game was delayed due to darkness. Bulson recorded his second hit of the game on Monday morning as play picked back up but pinch runner Mitchell Gumbko was left on first as UAM finished things off.
Game Four – (RV) St. Cloud State 19, Arkansas Monticello 2
St. Cloud State closed out the series with a run-rule 19-2 win over Arkansas Monticello in the finale, anchored by an electric two-way effort by Sam Riola (2-for-5, BB, 3 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI) alongside a patient approach from the lineup that coaxed 17 walks and produced 12 hits en route to four multi-run innings.
Riola didn't need much run support – homering twice and driving in four himself to account for all the help he needed – as the righthander struck out 10 across 6.0 innings of two-run ball to earn his first win of the young season. He scattered four hits and did not issue a walk, covering his six frames on 90 pitches to save a taxed bullpen from overexposure.
Four Huskies drew multiple walks as each starter reached base at least once in the game, led by Ethan Navratil producing a rare 0-for-0 with five walks, three runs scored and two RBI. Tyler Schiller (1-for-1, 3 BB, HBP, 4 R) drew three walks, was hit by a pitch and doubled to reach five times while Sawyer Smith (1-for-3, 3 BB, R, RBI) worked three free passes of his own.
Brayden Jacobson (2-for-3, 2 BB, 2 R, 2B, 5 RBI) enjoyed yet another monster game at the dish, droving in five while recording his third straight multi-hit performance. Over the four-game series, the redshirt freshman went 10-for-13 (.769) with eight runs scored and 10 RBI, posted a 1:5 K:BB ratio and smacked two doubles.
Trailing 1-0 through one, Jacobson worked a bases-loaded walk in the second followed by a John Nett (1-for-5, BB, R, RBI) run-scoring single to put the Huskies in front. Riola kept the Boll Weevils quiet with a pair of zeroes in the second and third before SCSU plated six in the top of the fourth on two bases-loaded free passes, an error and a two-run single off the bat of Tate Wallat (2-for-3, BB, R, 3 RBI, SF).
Riola opened a five-run fifth with a one-out solo homer before the Huskies loaded the bases for Navratil. The sophomore drew a walk to bring home Smith, Wallat followed with a sacrifice fly then Jacobson smoked a two-run double into the left-center alley.
A monstrous three-run shot from Riola in the seventh punctuated another six run fame, handing the Huskies a 19-2 lead at the stretch. Drew Beier (1-for-4, BB, HBP, 2 R 2 RBI) moved to the mound for the final frame, striking out the side after allowing a leadoff single to secure the series split.
