Lineup produces 24 hits between two games; Beier throws gem in opener
ST. CLOUD, Minn – St. Cloud State Baseball (16-11, 8-4 NSIC) split their first two games with Concordia-St. Paul (12-14, 8-5 NSIC) in Sioux City, Iowa on Friday, dropping the Golden Bears 12-1 in the opener before falling 6-5 in game two at Bishop Mueller Field.
Game One: St. Cloud State 12, Concordia-St. Paul 1
SCSU's lineup posted four three-run frames in support of a brilliant start by Drew Beier, jumping out to a quick lead in the weekend series with a game one win. Beier carved over 6.0 innings of work, allowing a lone unearned run on seven hits and a walk on his way to his fourth straight win. The righthander has allowed one run or less in each of his last four starts, recording a 0.73 ERA across that span.
The Huskies recorded four straight hits to open the bottom of the first with the fourth being a towering three-run blast off the bat of Drew Bulson (1-for-2, HBP, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI), opening up a 3-0 lead through one. SCSU added three more in the fourth as a Ben Clapp (1-for-3, R) single with two on scooted under the glove of the Golden Bear left fielder, plating a pair before Tate Wallat (0-for-1, RBI, SF) brought home Clapp with a sac fly.
Garrett Bevacqua (3-for-4, 2 R, 2B, 3 RBI) doubled in two with zero gone in the fifth and later scored on a Sawyer Smith (2-for-3, R, RBI) infield single for a three spot in the frame. A pinch-hit RBI double from Mitchell Gumbko (1-for-1, R, 2B, RBI), a sacrifice fly off the bat of Parker Savard (0-for-0, RBI, SF) and a Bevacqua RBI single added three more in the sixth for the decisive 12-1 lead.
Cooper Avery closed things out with a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out a pair.
Game Two: Concordia-St. Paul 6, St. Cloud State 5
Game one's lopsided tilt was followed by a tight second game of the doubleheader that saw SCSU bring the game within a run three separate times. Concordia-St. Paul plated a run in the second to take a 1-0 lead that lasted just two frames, as Mitchell Gumbko (1-for-3, BB, 2 R, HR, RBI) smashed a leadoff blast in the third to draw things even at one.
Riley Ahern took a hard-luck loss despite dealing a strong start, tossing 5.0 innings of two-run ball. The grad student righthander scattered five hits and walked none while punching out five, exiting after the fifth.
The Golden Bears added a run in the fourth and pushed their lead to three with one more in the sixth and seventh. After the stretch, St. Cloud State loaded up the bases for Garrett Bevacqua (0-for-4, BB, RBI). SCSU's right fielder drew a four-pitch walk, then Drew Bulson (3-for-4, BB, 2 2B, 2 RBI) lined an RBI single off the pitcher to cut the deficit to 4-3. CSP scored a run in the eighth, answered a half-inning later with back-to-back doubles from Ben Clapp (2-for-4, R, 2B) and Ethan Navratil (3-for-4, R, 2B, RBI).
Concordia-St. Paul added an insurance run in the ninth, one that served as a crucial one as SCSU plated a run in the home half but left the tying run on third.
Sam Riola added a multi-hit game (2-for-4, BB, R, 3B) while throwing a scoreless inning of relief.
