St. Cloud State Men’s Basketball Hits the Road for First Round NSIC Tournament Tilt

Huskies head to Southwest Minnesota State, look for first NSIC Tournament win since 2021-22
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Twelfth-seeded St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (12-16, 8-14 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) travels to fifth-seeded Southwest Minnesota State (17-11, 14-8 NSIC) Wednesday for a First Round NSIC Tournament game. The game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. at the R/A Facility in Marshall.

NSIC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
St. Cloud State has a 16-13 all-time record in the NSIC Tournament. Last season, the Huskies earned the 12 seed after finishing with 7-15 conference record. The Huskies traveled to Sioux Falls and fell to the Cougars, 85-59.

LAST TIME OUT
St. Cloud State closed out its regular season last Saturday, traveling to Concordia-St. Paul to take on the Golden Bears. The Huskies jumped out to a 11-4 lead after graduate student Luke Taylor (Germantown, Wis.) dropped the hammer on a dunk. SCSU held onto its lead for the next six minutes, but a 12-3 run by CSP gave the Bears a 26-24 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half. The teams battled back and forth during the final minutes of the half and the Huskies were able to hold a one-point lead into the halftime break.
St. Cloud State's offense struggled in the first half, shooting 34% from the field. The Huskies only made three of their 12 three-point attempts and turned the ball over five times, leading to eight points on the other end for the Golden Bears. The Huskies' defense forced CSP into 15 three-point attempts and limited it to only five makes.
The Huskies expanded their lead to four points early in the second half after freshman Jamiir Allen (Milwaukee, Wis.) knocked down a three-pointer. The Bears responded with a three of their own which kickstarted a 12-2 run, giving them a 44-38 lead with just under 15 minutes remaining in the game. As the game started to slip away from SCSU, graduate student Craig Steele (Portage, Wis.) finished a layup off an assist from senior Joe Mutimer (Melbourne, Australia). Mutimer then got a steal in the halfcourt and passed it ahead to freshman Anish Ramlall (Rosemount, Minn.) who threw down a two-handed slam on the fastbreak to bring the Huskies within two points. CSP quickly responded with a and-one layup and a jumper to cap off a 5-1 run, pushing its lead back up to six points. St. Cloud State stayed within striking distance for the next few minutes, but an 8-2 run by the Bears pushed the lead to 10 points with just over five minutes left in the game. The Huskies trailed by 6+ points for the final minutes and were defeated 78-72 in their regular season finale.
The Golden Bears had five players score in double-digits with Sean Matthieu leading the way with 19 points. CSP shot 42% from the field, an efficient 50% from beyond the arc and got to the free throw line 30 times in the second half, converting on 20 of those attempts.
Allen scored a team-high 15 points while grabbing a career-high eight rebounds. The freshman also knocked down three three-pointers, dished out two assists and recorded a steal. Freshman Nate Dahl (Buffalo, Minn.) nearly recorded a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Dahl also tallied two assists and steals while making nine of his 16 free throw attempts; both of which were career-highs. Senior Matt Willert (Buffalo, Minn.) scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out a team-high three assists in 23 minutes off the bench.

Wednesday's matchup with the Mustangs will be the 67th meeting between the two programs. The Huskies hold a 41-25 advantage in the series. This matchup will be the fourth time these teams will have met in the postseason with the most recent game coming in 2018. St. Cloud State has a record of 2-1 against SMSU in the postseason. Having faced off twice already this season, the teams have a familiarity with each other, but the Mustangs won both of those matchups.
In the first matchup, St. Cloud State held a lead as big as three-points in the first eight minutes of the game. SMSU rallied from that deficit with a 9-0 run to take a 21-15 lead. The Mustangs held that lead for the rest of the half and led 38-31 going into halftime.
St. Cloud State struggled offensively only shooting 36% from the field and 33% from three-point range. Despite the low three-point percentage, St. Cloud State made six threes' to SMSU's two, keeping it within striking distance.
The Huskies opened the second half on fire, using a 13-6 run to tie the game at 44 with Matt Willert scoring seven of those points. St. Cloud continued to battle throughout the second half, but SMSU was pulled away with an 11-0 run over a four-minute stretch to all but seal the fate of the Huskies. The Mustangs continued to stretch their lead and came away with an 86-75 victory.
Freshman Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia) led the Huskies in scoring with 15 points and dished out four assists, grabbed two rebounds and made two three-pointers. Willert scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds and recorded a steal in 25 minutes in a starting role. Freshman Wyatt Hawks (White Bear Lake, Minn.) nearly put up a double-double as he scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Hawks knocked down his first career three-pointer for the Huskies and recorded five offensive rebounds.
The Mustangs burst out of the gates with a 9-0 run in the first 2:14 of the second matchup. The Huskies put their first points on the board after Willert netted a three-pointer at the 15:39 mark. Despite the slow start, SCSU battled back with a 7-0 run after Luke Taylor finished a layup in the paint and drained a corner three-pointer off an assist by Willert. Anish Ramlall tied the game at 11 with a three-pointer of his own off another assist by Willert. The Mustangs responded to the Huskies run by knocking down three three-pointers in the midst of an 11-3 run to take a 22-14 lead with 5:46 left in the first half. SMSU held a lead as big as 10 points in the final minutes of the half and went into the break with a 30-22 lead after Jake Phipps finished a layup with 23 seconds remaining.
The Huskies struggled in the first half, shooting a mere 27% from the field and committed six turnovers. SCSU was able to keep itself within striking distance by knocking down five of its 12 three-point attempts – a 41% clip. SMSU shot 48% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc.
Willert made the first field goal of the half with a three-pointer off of a ghost screen action. The Mustangs responded with a three-pointer of their own and then capped off a 6-2 run with a thunderous dunk to take a 41-27 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. SMSU held a lead as big as 16 points in the second half and maintained a 8+ point lead for the remainder of the game. The Huskies went on to lose 65-52.

Hawks nearly recorded a double-double as he scored six points and totaled a game-high nine rebounds. Hawks also tied his career-high with blocks as she swatted three shots in the game.
SCOUTING SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE
Southwest Minnesota State comes into this matchup as the five seed in the NSIC Tournament with an overall record of 17-11 and a conference record of 14-8. The Mustangs split their matchups last weekend, taking down Minot State 72-53 on Friday and falling to MSU Moorhead 79-77 in overtime. SMSU has won four of its past five games by an average of 15.5 points.
Senior center Jake Phipps leads the Mustangs in scoring with an average of 15.8 points per game on 57% from the field and 35% from beyond the arc. Phipps also averages 6.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 blocks per game. The senior was named to the NSIC Shining 5 this week after he averages 18.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 3.0 steals in last weeks' games. Phipps also shot 70% from the field and made four of his five three-point attempts.
Freshman forward Aeron Stevens is the second leading scorer on the team with an average of 12.4 points while shooting 47% from the field. Stevens is second on the team in rebounding with five per game and averages 1.3 assists. The freshman has scored 10+ points in four consecutive games including a 22-point performance against MSU Moorhead last weekend.
Senior guard Cliff Cofield averages 11.2 points per game while shooting 47% from the field and 40% from three-point land. Cofield grabs 3.9 rebounds per game, is sixth in the NSIC in assists with 3.6 per game and leads the NSIC with 1.8 steals per game. Last weekend, Cofield only played one minute against Minot State and did not play the following night in the game against MSU Moorhead. His status for Wednesday is unknown.
Junior guard Dunwa Omot is the final Mustang to average double-digit points as he scores 10.7 per game on 45% from the field and 38% from three-point range. Omot also averages 2.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.0 steal per game. The junior has scored in double figures in three consecutive games with two 13-point performances last weekend.
The first game against the Huskies saw the SMSU foursome also score 15+ points with Phipps leading the way with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Omot poured in 20 points of his own on 6-of-10 shooting. Stevens scored 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting in 23 minutes off the bench. Cofield scored 15 points, dished five assists and recorded three steals.

Brad Bigler is in his 15th season with Southwest Minnesota State and is the program's all-time winningest coach with 238 victories and 188 losses. Bigler is a two-time NSIC Coach of the Year recipient as he was awarded the honor in the 2012-2013 season as well as the 2016-2017 season. Bigler has recorded double-digit victories in all but two of his 15 seasons and has exceeded 13 wins in 10 of those seasons including 16 wins last year. In 19 career matchups with St. Cloud State, Bigler has a record of 10-11.

St. Cloud State senior Matt Willert (Buffalo, Minn.) became the 46th member of the St. Cloud State Men's Basketball 1,000-point club in the 68-61 win at UMary on December 12. Willert scored a game-high 16 points, including six points after he reached 1,000. He ended the night with 1,006 career points, moving him up to No. 45 on the all-time scoring list.
Willert current sits at No. 31 with 1,190 points. He passed Dean Kesler (1990-92 – 1,149 points) and Brindley Theisen (2015-19 – 1158 points) two weeks ago. He has played in 102 games (2,680 minutes) over the past four seasons for the Huskies. He averages 11.7 points per game for his career on 393-of-942 (41.7%) shooting from the field, 196-573 (34.2%) from three and 208-241 (86.3%) from the free throw line.
WILLERT WATCH
In addition to working his way up the all-time scoring list, senior Matt Willert is third on the career free throw percentage list (86.3%), tied for eighth on the career three-point makes list (196) with Alex Carlson (2000-04). Two weeks ago, he passed Nate Miller (2001-05 – 188) and Taylor Witt (2007-11 – 189) and 19th on the career blocks list (52). He made eight three pointers at Minnesota Crookston earlier this season, missing out on the single game record by one.
SHINING STAR
St. Cloud State freshman Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia) was named to the NSIC Men's Basketball Shining 5 by the league office on Nov. 11 for his efforts in his first two collegiate games. He averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in just 24.5 minutes per game during the 2-0 weekend for the Huskies in Kansas City. He shot 68.4% (13-of-19) from the field and 57.1% (4-of-7) from behind the three-point line over the weekend. In his collegiate debut on Friday, he erupted for 25 points and grabbed six rebounds in an 80-73 win over Pittsburg State. In just his second collegiate game ever, he recorded his first career double-double (10 points and 11 rebounds) in a 74-64 win over Henderson State.

In addition to working his way up the all-time scoring list, senior Matt Willert is third on the career free throw percentage list (86.3%), tied for eighth on the career three-point makes list (196) with Alex Carlson (2000-04). Two weeks ago, he passed Nate Miller (2001-05 – 188) and Taylor Witt (2007-11 – 189) and 19th on the career blocks list (52). He made eight three pointers at Minnesota Crookston earlier this season, missing out on the single game record by one.
SHINING STAR
St. Cloud State freshman Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia) was named to the NSIC Men's Basketball Shining 5 by the league office on Nov. 11 for his efforts in his first two collegiate games. He averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in just 24.5 minutes per game during the 2-0 weekend for the Huskies in Kansas City. He shot 68.4% (13-of-19) from the field and 57.1% (4-of-7) from behind the three-point line over the weekend. In his collegiate debut on Friday, he erupted for 25 points and grabbed six rebounds in an 80-73 win over Pittsburg State. In just his second collegiate game ever, he recorded his first career double-double (10 points and 11 rebounds) in a 74-64 win over Henderson State.
