
Huskies Split Doubleheader to Open Series with No. 19 Augustana

Tupy spins gem in 3-0 win in game one, Vikings take game two 6-3
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball (9-7, 5-1 NSIC) split a doubleheader with No. 19 Augustana (12-3, 5-1 NSIC) to open a four-game series on Thursday at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud. Redshirt junior Luke Tupy (New Prague, Minn.) threw a seven-inning complete game shutout in a 3-0 win in the opening game before Augustana bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second game.
The doubleheader was played at Joe Faber Field, marking one of the earliest home games in recent history.
GAME 1 – SCSU 3, AUGIE 0
The Huskies got all the scoring it needed in the second inning when they plated three runs. First, senior Tyler Schiller (Hutchinson, Minn.) sent home the first two runs of the game with a bases-loaded single that scored redshirt junior Garrett Bevacqua (Carlsbad, Calif.) and junior Sawyer Smith (Somers, Wis.). Then, two batters later, senior Mitchell Gumbko (Ada, Mich.) sent a sac fly to left field to score junior Ethan Navratil (Albany, Minn.).
The support was all Tupy needed to lead the Huskies to victory, as he stifled the Vikings bats over seven innings. Tupy struck out 10, including the side in the first inning while allowing five hits and five walks. Tupy routinely worked around jams with Augustana stranding 10 runners in the game.

In the second game, Augustana scored three runs in the third and sixth innings while St. Cloud State plated single runs in the first, second and fourth innings but couldn't mount a comeback despite getting a runner on-base in each of the last three innings.
Following senior Drew Beier's (Foley, Minn.) leadoff single to open the Huskies' half of the first inning, redshirt senior Noah Dehne (St. Paul, Minn.) doubled to deep center field to give SCSU a 1-0 lead. SCSU extended its lead to 2-0 after Bevacqua scored when Gumbko grounded into a bases-loaded double play in the second inning.
Errors would plaque the Huskies in the third and sixth innings, as both of SCSU's mishaps led the three runs to help Augustana grab the lead in the third inning and extended it in the sixth.

St. Cloud State and Augustana will finish its four-game series on Friday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. CT.
