
Huskies Complete Comeback to Earn Series Split with No. 19 Augustana

Augustana wins game one 6-1 before SCSU erases seven-run deficit in game two to win 11-10
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball (10-8, 6-2 NSIC) completed a seven-run comeback to walk-off No. 19 Augustana (13-4, 6-2 NSIC) and split a doubleheader and four-game series on Saturday at Joe Faber Field. The Vikings earned a 6-1 victory in the first game before SCSU won 11-10 in the nightcap following a walk-off single from graduate Cal James (Buffalo, Minn.).
GAME 1 – AUGIE 6, SCSU 1
Augustana jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Huskies respond with its lone run in the bottom of the inning. Junior Sawyer Smith (Somers, Wis.) drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to center field, plating senior Drew Beier (Foley, Minn.). Augustana scored a solo home run in the third and two runs in the seventh.
Senior Cooper Avery (Fort Myers, Fla.) was lights out in relief, going 2.2 innings without allowing a hit while only surrendering one walk.

The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after a two-run home run from redshirt senior Noah Dehne (St. Paul, Minn.), but the lead was short lived, as Augustana scored nine runs in the second inning.
SCSU began its comeback in the fourth inning when the Huskies scored five runs as Beier, Dehne, Smith and senior Ben Clapp (Maple Lake, Minn.) all drove in runs to make the score 9-7. Then, the Huskies regained the lead again in the fifth inning when Beier launched a three-run home run to scored senior Mitchell Gumbko (Ada, Mich.) and senior Tyler Schiller (Hutchinson, Minn.).
Augustana knotted the score at 10-10 in the seventh inning, where the game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning. James came to the plate with two runners on and sent a single between the first and second basemen and into right field, sending Gumbko racing around from second base for the game-winning run and walk-off win.

St. Cloud State will next travel to Minnesota State for a four-game series scheduled for March 22-24 in Mankato.
