
Huskies Take One of Three Against Minnesota State

Habeck’s gem, homers from Clapp and James powers SCSU to 5-2 win in game two
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – St. Cloud State Baseball (11-10, 7-4 NSIC) won one of three games against Minnesota State (11-10, 7-4 NSIC) in a three-game series. On Thursday, the Huskies dropped the first game 3-2 before winning game two 5-1 behind home runs from senior Ben Clapp (Maple Lake, Minn.) and graduate Cal James (Buffalo, Minn.), as well as seven strong innings from senior Jack Habeck (Appleton, Wis.). In Friday's series finale, Minnesota State walked-off the Huskies for a 3-2 win.
GAME 1 – MSU 3, SCSU 2 (Thursday)
St. Cloud State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning following a sacrifice fly from junior Garrett Bevacqua (Carlsbad, Calif.) to drive in junior Sawyer Smith (Somers, Wis.). The Huskies then extend its lead to 2-0 after senior Tyler Schiller (Hutchinson, Minn.) drove in Smith for his second run of the game.
Minnesota State bounced back in the third inning, however, as the Mavericks had a pair of home runs to take a 3-2 lead, then held on in the seventh inning for the win.

In the second game, Minnesota State jumped out to an early lead first before SCSU clamped down and shut down the Mavericks for the final eight innings.
Clapp and James got the scoring started for the Huskies with Clapp hitting a two-run home run in the second inning followed by a solo shot from James in the third inning to double SCSU's lead. Junior Blaine Guthrie's (Emerald, Wis.) single drove in another Husky run later in the third, while senior Drew Beier (Foley, Minn.) added padding to SCSU's lead in the sixth with an RBI single to make the score 5-1.
Habeck was brilliant for the Huskies on the mound, stifling the Mavericks over seven innings while allowing only one run on six hits while striking out three. Grady Fuchs finished the game for the Huskies with two scoreless innings while only allowing one hit.
TOP HUSKIES
In third game on Friday, SCSU took a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning following a home run from Smith, but the lead wouldn't last for long as Minnesota State won the game with a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

St. Cloud State will next host Sioux Falls for a four-game set, scheduled for March 28-30 at Joe Faber Field.

- James increased his team-lead to six home runs on the season, ranking sixth in the NSIC.
- Beier's RBI moved him to 10 on the season.
