SCSU and Wayne State Split Doubleheader to Open Series

Bevacqua logs three RBI in second game to lead SCSU to 7-4 win
WAYNE, Neb. – St. Cloud State Baseball (23-15, 19-9 NSIC) split a doubleheader against Wayne State (22-15, 17-10 NSIC) on Saturday to open a three-game conference series. Wayne State was able to take the win the first game of the series, 4-0, before the Huskies responded with a 7-4 win in the second game.
GAME 1 – WSC 4, SCSU 0
The Huskies offense was unable to figure out Wildcat starter Corbin Kirk, who went the distance in the series opener, as SCSU was only able to muster four hits and six base runners in the game. Wayne State scored single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
SCSU starter redshirt junior Luke Tupy (New Prague, Minn.) went the distance as well, as he struck out eight batters but allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks.
TOP HUSKIES
After being stifled in the first game, the Huskies wasted no time getting the bats going in the second games, jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first four trips to the plate. The scoring began in the first inning when redshirt senior Noah Dehne (St. Paul, Minn.) triple to right center to drive in Beier, who led off the game with a leadoff walk. Junior Sawyer Smith (Somers, Wis.) then drove Dehne in with a sacrifice fly to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
Bevacqua doubled the Huskies lead in the third inning with a two-RBI single before SCSU added on three runs in the fourth, including a homer from Beier, to extend the lead to 7-0.
On the bump, senior Payton VanBeck (Elrosa, Minn.) went six innings and struck out five while only allowing two runs on eight hits and three walks to improve to 4-3 on the season. Senior Grady Fuchs (Paynesville, Minn.) came on in relief and pitched three innings to shut the door on the Wildcats to earn his first save of the season.

- Smith had two hits in the game to extend his team-lead with 18 multi-hit games.
- Dehne hit his first triple of the season.
- Junior Blaine Guthrie (Emerald, Wis.) had his fourth multi-hit game of the season.
