Last Time Out
The Huskies continued GLIAC play this past weekend as they hosted Wisconsin-Parkside and Northern Michigan.
Against Parkside on Friday, SCSU opened up the game with a strong defensive performance. The midfield and backline for SCSU was smothering as they took away chances for Parkside to advance the ball up the field. Cutting off passing lanes and making breaks on the ball led to the Huskies holding Parkside to only two shots in the first half with none coming on goal. Offensively, SCSU generated six shots with one landing on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net as the game went into the half tied 0-0.
Out of the break, St. Cloud State continued their strong defensive play as the game remained at a standstill. In the 75th minute, the Rangers went on a counterattack after the Huskies cleared the ball. With quick and decisive passing, Parkside was able to work their way through the defense to give Kevin Sosa a shot on goal. Sosa capitalized on the chance to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. With time ticking away, SCSU worked the ball into their attacking zone multiple times during the final 15 minutes. They created a few scoring chances off two corners kicks, but nothing graced the meshing. The Huskies would ultimately be defeated 1-0 for their second conference loss of the season.

Against Northern Michigan on Friday, NMU opened the game with a lot of energy and were pressing against the Huskies' defense. St. Cloud State held firm as goalkeeper Ramy Atia produced a few saves to keep Northern Michigan scoreless. In the 25th minute of the first half, NMU pushed the ball into the box and would be fouled which led to a penalty kick. Lucas Rosen stepped up to take the kick and capitalized on the opportunity to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Late in the half, SCSU generated a counterattack that saw Yuken Harmon streak down the field with a one-on-one breakaway chance. The Northern Michigan keeper stepped up and denied Harmon to keep SCSU scoreless. St. Cloud State ultimately went into the break trailing 1-0.
Coming out of halftime with a greater sense of urgency, the Huskies started to put pressure on the Northern Michigan defense. St. Cloud State was able to work their way into their attacking zone on multiple occasions, but nothing came to fruition. In the 82nd minute, King Dwumah Acheampong nearly equalized the game after a header in the box just missed the meshing. With time ticking away, the Huskies played higher up the field eyeing the game-tying goal. Northern Michigan went on to take away the ball and go on the counterattack with few Huskies to beat down the field. Ian Weimer of NMU passed the ball over to Teun Van Gansewinkel on the break for what appeared to be a free shot after Atia came out on Weimer. Yannick Langerhuizen sprinted back and saved the ball from scoring on the initial attempt. Van Gansewinkel followed through on his shot and finished off the opportunity to put the Wildcats up 2-0. That score held up as St. Cloud State dropped their third straight match.

The streak is now the third longest in program history and is the second longest amongst field players. Langerhuizen's streak trails only goalkeeper Dylan De Baldo (2023) and defenseman Vukota Mastilovic (2023) who tallied 13 consecutive games playing 90+ minute. In his young career, Langerhuizen has already totaled 19 games playing 90+ minutes which is the fifth most in program history.
Saving the Day
With six saves on the weekend, goalkeeper Ramy Atia inches closer to becoming the programs all-time leader in saves. Ata is up to 92 saves in his career and trails only Gage Steiner (110 saves) for the top spot. The senior keeper has picked up where he left off last season with 30 saves on the year after saving 62 shots in his inaugural year with the Huskies.
Series History
Friday's game against Purdue Northwest will be the tenth overall match between the teams with St. Cloud State holding a 5-4-0 record. The teams played three times last year including a game in the GLIAC Tournament.
With the first game coming at Husky Stadium, Mika Folstad got the party started for the SCSU in the 6th minute as he knocked in a ball deep in the box with his head. Folstad was set up by Nolan Pratumwon who delivered a deep ball to the left side of the field to Owen Worsdell who then skipped it across the field to Folstad in the box who banged it in the net. St. Cloud State held that 1-0 lead for most of the half until Noah Eklund dished the ball to Matt Greenland on a throw in who then found William Gonzalez in the box. Gonzalez took a few dribbles to his left before smashing a shot off his left foot that found its way into the bottom right corner for a goal in the 44th minute. Those two goals would be all the scoring necessary to get the win as St. Cloud State defeated the Pride 2-0.
Game two in Hammond, Indiana saw the Huskies fell behind 1-0 after allowing a goal in the 19th minute. The Huskies offense was relatively quite in the first half until Andrew Holmes fired a rocket in the 42nd minute to tie the game right before halftime. The teams played out the final three minutes before going into halftime tied 1-1. The second half picked up for the Huskies as they totaled eight shots in the half after only having three in the first half. The teams battled late into the second half, still tied at 1-1, before St. Cloud State created a break opportunity in the 78th minute. Mika Folstad found Rhys Ward streaking up the field who then found Philip Caputo with an opportunity to score. Caputo fired a cross shot off his right foot that beat the keeper in the bottom left corner to give the Huskies a 2-1 advantage. The defense for St. Cloud State closed out the game by not allowing a shot on goal in the final 12 minutes. For the day, Purdue Northwest could only muster three shots on goal. St. Cloud State earned their first comeback win of the season with a 2-1 victory in their regular season finale.
In the GLIAC quarterfinal game at Husky Stadium, the Pride struck quickly as they scored a goal in the 5th minute of the first half to take a 1-0 lead. The potent Huskies offense was held in check the entirety of the game as they could only muster seven shots in the game with only one landing on goal. St. Cloud State continued to battle late into the second half as they created offensive possessions in Pride territory but were unable to translate those opportunities into shots. SCSU played a more aggressive style of offense to create more chances late in the second half, but Purdue Northwest was able to capitalize twice with two break opportunities in the final five minutes as they scored their second and third goals of the game to put the nail in the coffin. St. Cloud State fell 3-0 in their final game of the 2024 season.
Sunday's game against Roosevelt will be the third all-time meeting between the programs with the series being tied 1-1. Each team came away with a win on their home field a season ago.
The game at Husky Stadium started off slowly for both teams as neither were able to find the back of the net for the majority of the first half. That changed for the Huskies in the 36th minute as Noah Eklund drove a ball into Roosevelt territory that found its way to Matt Greenland. Greenland took a few dribbles and delivered a beautiful ball down to Rhys Ward who was deep in the box and took a shot off his right foot across the box which landed in the back of the net. The Huskies held onto that lead for the remainder of the half as they led 1-0 going into the break. The second half saw Roosevelt pick up their offensive attack as they registered five shots on goal. Goalkeeper Ramy Atia was flawless throughout the evening as he made big-time save after big-time save including a few diving saves. The Huskies had a few offensive opportunities in the second half to expand their lead in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net. The goal by Rhys Ward would be all the scoring necessary as St. Cloud State went on to defeat Roosevelt 1-0 for their seventh straight victory and third straight shutout victory.
With game two in Chicago, Illinois, the teams battled to a scoreless first half as the game would be tied 0-0 at the break. The Huskies' offense faltered in the first half as they were outshot 11-3. St. Cloud State created scoring opportunities and breaks throughout the entirety of the game but were unable to translate it into shots as they were outshot 22-6 in the game and 9-3 on shots on goal. The Lakers were able to break the tie late in the game as Caco Fernandez found the back of the net in the 78th minute to give them a 1-0 lead. St. Cloud State was unable to equalize the game as they suffered their fifth straight loss with a 1-0 defeat to Roosevelt.
