Backcourt becomes first All-Conference duo since 2022
Burnsville, Minn.- St. Cloud State Men's Basketball backcourt of freshman Luke Winkel and sophomore Nate Dahl earned All-Conference Honors from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) as announced by the league office Thursday. Winkel was named to the First Team All-NSIC while Dahl earned Second Team honors. Winkel and Dahl became the first pair of teammates to earn All-Conference honors for St. Cloud State since the 2022 season where Anthony Roberts and Caleb Donaldson were recognized.
Â
As a freshman, Luke Winkel led the Huskies in scoring after averaging 13.1 points per game while shooting 40.7% from the field, 38.8% from three, and 80% from the free throw line. With a tight handle and crafty knack for scoring, Winkel was consistently able to create space and get to his spots in the mid-range, while also being able to set back and knock down a three. His 38 three-point makes were the second most on the team. Because of his ability to breakdown the defense and force a help defender, he excelled in reading the defense and finding the open man with his 4.0 assists per game, which was the sixth most in the conference. His craftiness also extended to the defensive end where he nabbed 1.4 steals per game. Against MSU Moorhead on February 2, Winkel set a career-high of 28 points on an efficient 10/20 shooting while making three three-pointers and going 5/8 from the free throw line. He also dished out a career-high of eight assists and grabbed five rebounds.
Â
In his second season with the Huskies, Nate Dahl took a step forward as an offensive player as his scoring jumped from 5.4 points to 11.8. Dahl shot 41.3% from the field, 34% from three, and 80.5% from the free throw line. His physicality was on display night in and night out as his tenacity driving to the basket led to 4.1 free throw attempts per game, the fourth most in the conference. The relentless effort to get downhill translated to weakside help which in return garnered 2.1 assists per game for the sophomore. On the defensive end, Dahl made his presence felt every game with contagious defensive energy and effort. The strength and quickness of Dahl led to hard nosed defense that made it difficult for offensive players to score on. The scrappiness and willingness to hunt the ball resulted in Dahl averaging 5.1 rebounds, the second most on the team, and 1.4 steals, tied for the most on the team. Against Bemidji State on December 19, Dahl set a career-high in scoring with 23 points on an uber efficient 7/10 shooting. He was resilient in attacking the rim which translated to seven free throw attempts, in which he went 7/7. He also tallied five rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
Â
Winkel, Dahl, and the rest of the Huskies will continue postseason play as they face off against the four-seed Minnesota State on Sunday, March 2 at the Sanford Pentagon.
