St. Cloud State Track & Field Returns to Mankato for NSIC Championships

Huskies compete Friday and Saturday at the Myers Field House in Mankato
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Track & Field returns to Mankato on Friday and Saturday for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships, hosted by Minnesota State at the Myers Field House. On Friday, field events start at noon and running events start at 1 p.m. while on Saturday, multi-events begin at 9 a.m. with running events scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
All-Conference performers will consist of the top three place winners in each event and the members of the top two relay teams from the Conference meet.

St. Cloud State Track & Field competed at the Maverick Premier #1, hosted by Minnesota State at the Myers Field House in Mankato on Friday, Feb. 14. The Huskies posted 20 personal bests, one season best, and four top-10 finishes.
Sophomore distance runner Alena Donahue (West Salem, Wis.) set a 3,000 meters personal best for the second week in a row and recorded one of the two top-five finishes for the Huskies. She ran 10:47.63, cutting nearly 3.5 seconds off her previous best to finish fourth.
All eight Huskies in the 200 meters set new indoor or overall best marks. Fifth year sprinter Katie Lavato (Buffalo, Minn.) and sophomore sprinter Jenna Marxhausen (Two Harbors, Minn.) set new indoor bests, running 25.72 and 28.29 respectively. Lavato cut 0.26 seconds off her previous indoor best, set earlier this year to finish 10th. Marxhausen ran 0.53 seconds faster than last week when she set her previous indoor personal best.
Sophomore sprinter Viola Okey-Ezealah (Part-Harcourt, Nigeria), freshman jumper/sprinter Zaria Stapleton (Nassau, Bahamas), senior jumper/middle distance runner Makaylin Christenson (Prarie Farm, Wis.), freshman sprinter Jayla Patterson, freshman multi-event athlete Kaylee Cooper (Loudon, Tenn.) and sophomore sprinter/hurdler Trinity Wallendal (Fon du Lac, Wis.) all ran to new personal bests in the 200 meters. Okey-Ezealah cut nearly a full second off her previous indoor best, Stapleton knocked over 0.40 seconds off, Christenson was 0.25 faster than her previous best, Patterson was just over 0.50 faster, Cooper was just under 0.20 faster and Wallendal went under 30.00 for the first time this season and second time of her career.
Lavato was the lone Husky to record a top-three finish. She ran the fifth fastest qualifying time in the 60-meter prelims and ended up finishing third in a new personal best time of 7.74, 0.03 seconds faster than her previous best. In addition to her 200-meter personal best, Okey-Ezealah also ran to new best marks in the 60 (8.17) and the 400 (1:03.64). She took nearly 3.5 seconds of her previous best 400 time.
Patterson (8.30) and Cooper (8.77) each ran new personal bests in the 60 meters, while Wallendal (8.80) ran a new season's best. Christenson leaped to a new long jump personal record (5.18m/17-0), besting her old best mark from the season opener.
Freshman thrower Mackenzie McMahon (Baraboo, Wis.) tallied new personal bests in both the shot put (11.16m/36-7.5) and weight throw (11.74m/38-6.25). Her shot put was a new best by 0.75 meters and it was her first time over 11 meters. Her weight throw was a 0.30 meter improvement.
Freshman distance runners Alea Briggs and MerriAnna Johnson (Osceola, Wis.) each ran new 800-meter personal bests, cutting nearly 2.5 and 2.8 seconds off their previous best times respectively.
Sophomore sprinter/jumper Myesha Thompson (Mount Horeb, Wis.) ran a new personal best in the 60 hurdles (9.88). It was her second time this season running under 10.00.

PRESEASON POLLING
SCSU Track & Field was picked to finish 14th in the 2024-25 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Indoor Track & Field Preseason Coaches' Poll as announced by the league office on Dec. 5. The Huskies finished 14th at the 2023-24 NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
"I am excited about this talented group of women," said head coach Gabrielle Brown, "We are returning a large portion of our roster this season with more experience."
ATHLETES TO WATCH
Fifth year sprinter Katie Lavato (Buffalo, Minn.) and sophomore sprinter/jumper Myesha Thompson (Mount Horeb, Wis) were named the preseason athletes to watch by the NSIC.
Lavato, the Huskies track athlete to watch, set new personal bests in the 60 meters (7.77) and 400 meters (1:00.85) last indoor season. She notched seven top-five finishes, four top-two finishes and one event victory in the 2023-24 indoor season. At the NSIC Indoor Championships, she ran to her personal best time the 60 meters and competed in the 400 meters and 4x400 meter relay.
"Katie has the experience and the knowledge to do what it takes to be successful in this conference," said head coach Gabrielle Brown, "Her talent and efforts are felt as she has what it takes to elevate the program. It will be exciting to see how she puts it all together this year."
Thompson, the Huskies field athlete to watch, enjoyed a strong freshman campaign in 2023-24. Her personal bests in the long jump (18-4.25 / 5.59m), high jump (4-7.75 / 1.42m) and 400 meters came in the indoor portion of last year's season. She totaled three top-five finishes during indoor, including a long jump victory at the St. Thomas Opener. Thompson was the only Husky to score a point at the NSIC Indoor Championships, after her lifetime best leap was good enough to tie for seventh place. She also ran in the 4x400 relay at the championships.
"Myesha is a young talented leader that is excited and confident about the opportunities to grow," said Brown, "As she steps into her second season it will be fun to see the incremental successes she will continue to earn."
LEADER OF THE PACK
Head coach Gabrielle Brown enters her second season as SCSU's head Track & Field/Cross Country coach in 2024-25. A three-time All-American hurdler at Hamline, Brown joined St. Cloud State after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Macalester. She is the first Black female head coach in the history of St. Cloud State Athletics.
