St. Cloud State Baseball Falls to No. 10/6 Minnesota State in Doubleheader

Huskies mount comeback in second game but can’t get over the hump
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball (11-13, 7-7 NSIC) dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 10/6 Minnesota State (19-2, 13-1 NSIC) to open a four-game series on Thursday at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud. The Mavericks won the first game 4-1 and the second game 6-4 in an 11-inning back-and-forth thriller.
GAME 1 – MSU 8, SCSU 1
The first game of the day started with three straight walks from SCSU, allowing the Mavericks to jump out to a 3-0 lead as all three baserunners came around to score. After both teams traded runs in the third inning, the score remained 4-1 for two innings before Minnesota State scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to put the game out of reach at 8-1.
TOP HUSKIES
Junior Bryce Brassfield (Gilbert, Ariz.) provided a strong start for the Huskies, pitching 6.2 innings while only allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts.
Redshirt sophomore Hayden Konkol (Denmark, Wis.) then began the Huskies comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run, his third of the season. The Mavericks got a run back in the seventh before SCSU continued its comeback with three runs to even the score in the bottom half of the inning. The rally started with a two-run home run from Moreno and continued when senior Blaine Guthrie (Emerald, Wis.) tied the game on a double, plating junior Wyatt Tweet (Russell, Manitoba) to tie the score at 4-4.
Both teams failed to score in the next three innings, but then Minnesota State score two runs in the top of the 11th inning and then shut down the Huskies in the bottom half of the inning for the win.
