Lou and Volkers team up to shutdown Bulldogs in first game
SUPERIOR, Wis. – St. Cloud State Baseball (20-17, 16-11 NSIC) split a midweek doubleheader with Minnesota Duluth (16-20, 12-15 NSIC) on Wednesday at NBC Spartan Sports Complex in Superior, Wis. The Huskies got superb pitching from freshman Drayton Lou (Janesville, Wis.) and redshirt senior Frankie Volkers (Maple Grove, Minn.) in a 4-3 win in game one before a 11-1 setback in game two.
GAME 1 – SCSU 4, UMD 3
The first game featured a pitcher's duel, as all seven runs in the game were scored in single half innings by both teams. The Huskies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning on RBI singles from senior Ethan Navratil (Albany, Minn.), redshirt sophomore Hayden Konkol (Denmark, Wis.) and redshirt junior Eric Bello (Manati, Puerto Rico), and a double play groundout from senior Blaine Guthrie (Emerald, Wis.). UMD scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second on two solo home runs and an RBI single.
On the mound, Lou made his fourth start of the season and worked around the shaky third inning for a solid five inning start to earn his third win of the season. The Husky freshman allowed three earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two. Volkers came on in relief in the sixth and shut the door for the Huskies, pitching two scoreless innings while only allowing one walk with three strikeouts for his eighth save of the season.
