Holmes recognized by his alma mater for his legendary playing career
OTTAWA, ON (Canada) - On October 2, 2026, Carleton University Athletics will recognize St. Cloud State University Head Coach Sean Holmes for his playing career with the Ravens from 1983-1987.
Holmes was a part of what's considered to be one of the "most successful eras in Ravens men's soccer history." The 1984 Carleton University team, captained by Sean, advanced to the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU, now known as "USports") National Championship game which ended in a heartbreaking defeat in penalties. This would be the first National Championship game in Carleton University Men's Soccer history. By the end of his career, Holmes earned three Ontario University Athletics (OUA) all-star selections and the Jack Vogan Award as the top graduating athlete. He currently stands as Carleton's top-scoring defender of all-time.
"I was fortunate to be part of a young program that gave me the opportunity to play every minute from the very start." Holmes said when asked about his career at Carleton. "Oddly, it wasn't my first choice school, but it proved a perfect fit athletically, academically, and socially." Holmes and his teammates had a connection that goes all the way back to when they were kids. Holmes credits the Ravens team chemistry for their National Championship run. "6 of us, all local guys, had played with or against each other since we were 10 years old. Our bond, enduring friendships, and occasionally rivalries, made us into formidable competitors, that was the secret sauce."
In Carleton University's press release, they say Holmes was "Described by his teammates as being years ahead in his study of the game, Holmes had a vision from the backline that gave Carleton great form. His poise and calmness could be seen most when he was called upon for set pieces. To a man, teammates can't recall a time Holmes ever missed a penalty. "He was automatic," reflected Stephen Ball."
The Carleton Ravens Hall of Fame recognizes individuals and teams whose excellence, leadership, and contributions have made a lasting impact on Carleton Athletics.
