Winona State battles back to take the series finale
For the third straight game, Winona State got on the board in the first inning. The Warriors got a solo home run two batters into the game before a walk and two singles made it 2-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Huskies would mount a comeback. Senior Nick Ibrahim (Woodbury, Minn.) launched a double to right-center field with one out. Redshirt freshman Max Robinson (St. Michael, Minn.) followed with a single to left field, hooking a line drive towards the line to drive in Ibrahim. Junior Dawson Schmidt (Shiocton, Wis.) made it three straight hits, driving another ball to right-center for an RBI double to tie the game at two.
In the third, SCSU batted around, bringing nine batters to the plate. After a strikeout to open the inning, senior Wyatt Tweet (Russell, Manitoba) singled, junior Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) was hit by a pitch, and redshirt senior Eric Bello (Manati, Puerto Rico) picked up a base hit to load the bases. That brought up Ibrahim, who hit a two-run single to left to give the Huskies their first lead of the day. Robinson followed with an RBI double, driving in Bello to make it 5-2.
The Warriors would chip away in the fourth, scoring twice after three hits and a stolen base to cut the SCSU lead down to one. In the bottom of the inning, the Huskies made it a three-run game again by scoring two runs of their own. A walk, single, and wild pitch put runners on second and third for Ibrahim, who picked up his second two-run single of the ballgame.
With rain picking up on the field, the Warriors mounted a comeback in the top of the fifth inning. SCSU pitching issued five walks and Winona State added three hits to score six runs, making it 10-7 Warriors. The bottom of the fifth was a marathon inning, with freshman Ryan Cahoon (Northfield, Minn.) leading off with a walk and advancing to third on two wild pitches. With the weather worsening, the umpires brought the tarp on the field and a 30-minute rain delay ensued.
When the game resumed, sophomore pinch-hitter Jonathan Pribula (Plymouth, Minn.) walked, putting runners on the corners. Castro then popped up to shallow right field where the Warriors second baseman was able to make the catch but fell down in the process, allowing Cahoon to score from third to make it 10-8.
In the top of the sixth, a one-out, two-run homer by Winona State increased their lead to 12-8. That would prove to be the final at-bat of the game, as the rain would intensify and another rain delay followed. After a brief stoppage, the umpires and coaches decided no further baseball could be played. As at least five innings had been played, the game ended in a Winona State victory.
