LAST TIME OUT
The Huskies are coming off a tough midweek doubleheader, dropping both games to Concordia-St. Paul on Wednesday, April 15. Game one was a back-and-forth battle with four home runs hit between the two teams.
Redshirt junior Hayden Frank (St. Michael, Minn.) hit his second homer of the year in the second inning before redshirt sophomore Jonathan Pribula (Plymouth, Minn.) towered a two-run homer in the fourth. The teams were tied at 3-3 after five innings before trading runs in the sixth. Junior Dawson Schmidt (Shiocton, Wis.) put the Huskies in front with a go-ahead single, but the Golden Bears evened the game with a sac fly in the home half.
The game would go to extras, marking the fifth extra-inning contest of the year for SCSU. CSP would get the walk-off win in the ninth for the 5-4 win. Bryce Brassfield struck out 10 for the Huskies, making the start and working six strong innings.
The Golden Bears would earn the sweep with a 5-0 win in game two, backed by strong starting pitching. The Huskies had baserunners in every frame but couldn't push anything across.
THE BRYCE IS RIGHT
In his second season with SCSU, senior Bryce Brassfield (Gilbert, Ariz.) has been lights out in the rotation for the Huskies. Brassfield leads the team in ERA (4.30), innings pitched (52.1), strikeouts (67), complete games (2), and is tied for the team lead in wins (3). He's already surpassed his junior season where he struck out 65 batters in 66.1 innings of work.
Brassfield has also been one of the top pitchers in the conference, leading the NSIC in strikeouts (67), while ranking second in complete games (2), fourth in innings pitched (52.1) and eighth in ERA (4.30).
In his last start against Concordia-St. Paul, Brassfield posted another strong start, completing 6.0 innings while striking out 10 and walking just one. This is the second straight start he has reached 10+ strikeouts and he has now pitched at least 5.0 innings in seven of his nine starts.
FRESHMAN LEADS THE WAY
Freshman Ryan Cahoon (Northfield, Minn.) has stepped in immediately and been a go-to bat in the middle of the lineup for the Huskies, leading the team and all NSIC batters in on-base percentage (.545) and walks (39). In addition to those two categories, Cahoon is second on the Huskies in batting average (.359) while ranking second in triples (2) and OPS (1.023), third in slugging percentage (.478), and sixth in hits (33).
Cahoon had five hits against Southwest Minnesota State on March 29, which is tied for the most hits in a single game by an NSIC hitter this season and the most by a SCSU hitter since John Nett had five on April 30, 2023, against Minnesota Duluth. Cahoon drew one walk in the doubleheader against Concordia-St. Paul, pushing his season total to 39, third in program history for walks in a single season.
Huskies Single-Season Walks Leaders
Since joining the Huskies ahead of the 2025 season, junior Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) has been an extra-base machine, hitting 29 last season (16 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs) before adding another 25 (13 doubles, four triples, eight home runs) through 34 games this season. Castro's 29 extra base hits in 2025 led all Huskies and ranked just outside the top 10 on SCSU's single season all-time list.
Castro leads the Huskies in batting average (.382), OPS (1.215), hits (47), doubles (13), triples (four), home runs (eight), runs (30), RBIs (31), and slugging percentage (.748). He ranks among the NSIC's top 10 in numerous offensive categories, first in triples (four), fifth in doubles (13), fourth in slugging percentage (.748), seventh in batting average (.382), and fifth in OPS (1.215).
Castro currently has hit safely in seven of his last nine games, including six multi-hit performances. He had four hits on March 29 at Southwest Minnesota State, while scoring two runs and driving in five.
LARSON DEALING
In his redshirt freshman season, Conner Larson (Jordan, Minn.) has been steadily putting up zeros on the mound for SCSU. Larson has made six appearances, including two starts, totaling 20.1 innings pitched. He's allowed runs in just two of those outings for a 5.31 ERA, and opposing batters are hitting just .192 against the righthander, the lowest mark on the team (minimum 5.0 innings pitched).
Larson last pitched against Winona State on April 10, throwing 6.0 shutout innings out of the bullpen and earning his second win of the season. That extends Larson's scoreless streak up to 10.1 innings.
