
#2 St. Cloud State splits with Southwest Minnesota State

The Huskies lost the first contest by a 13-9 tally before coming back to gain a 6-4 win over SMSU in the second game. Â These two team will meet up again in an NSIC doubleheader on Sunday, April 12 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. Â The games have been moved up due to the weather forecast and the new start time on April 12 will now be 10 a.m. for the doubleheader. Â Fans should check back at the SCSU website (www.scsuhuskies.com) for the latest information on any weather related schedule changes.
In game one, SMSU and SCSU were tied at 1-1 before the Mustangs grabbed a 4-1 lead with three runs in the top of the third. Â The Huskies rallied with six runs in the fourth inning to make it 7-4. Â In the fifth inning, SMSU scored three runs and then added two more runs in the six inning to gain an 9-7 lead. Â The Huskies knotted the score up at 9-9 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning but a four run seventh inning gave SMSU the winning edge at 13-9.
Thanks to strong winds to left field, a total of six home runs were hit in the contest including SCSU roundtrippers by Mike Jurgella and Kyle Lieser. Â Eric Loxtercamp, Zach Hoffmann, Beau Fandel (2) and Zak Hoffman all had doubles in the game as SCSU and SMSU each posted 10 hits in the contest.
Logan Spitzack started the game for SCSU and pitched 3.1 innings before Kevin Bolder entered the game in relief. Â Nick Denny was the eventual pitcher of record for SCSU in the game as the Huskies' pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts in the game. Â Jake Leighton was the winning pitcher for SMSU with 1.0 inning of relief work.
In game two, SCSU charged to a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Mustangs pushed out a 4-1 lead with two runs apiece in the third and fourth innings. Â The Huskies settled the deal in the fifth inning as they charted five runs to make the final total at 6-4.
Loxtercamp had three hits in the game, including two doubles in the game with two runs scored. Â Karl Sorensen also had two hits, one run and one RBI in the game for the Huskies. Â In the game, SMSU outhit the Huskies 9-6 but SCSU did take advantage of three errors by SMSU to gain the win.
On the mound, Bryan Rohde started the game for SCSU and pitched 2.2 inning before Bolder earned the win with 4.2 innings of relief work that included two runs allowed and two strikeouts. Â Reese Gregory closed the door with 1.2 innings of relief work that earned him the save and four strikeouts.
The Huskies and Mustangs will now complete their series with a 10 a.m. start on Sunday, April 12 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. Â Tickets for these important NSIC games are available at the gate on game day.
