The #2 St. Cloud State University baseball team (26-2, 10-2 NSIC) gained a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victories over Wayne State College (12-12, 7-5 NSIC) on Friday, April 3 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. Â The Huskies captured a 7-0 win in game one and continued with a 5-0 shutout in game two against Wayne State. Â The games were SCSU's 2015 home opener at Joe Faber.
In game one, Garrett Harrison gained the shutout win with six innings of work that included seven strikeouts and three hits allowed. Â Karsen Forsman finished the game for the Huskies with one inning of relief work that included one strikeout. Â This was Harrison's fourth win of the season.
SCSU broke up a 0-0 tie in the fifth inning with a two RBI single by Eric Loxtercamp that scored Zak Hoffman and Karl Sorensen. Â Mike Jurgella completed the fifth inning with a three run homer that scored Brandon Arnold and Loxtercamp, which made the tally 5-0. Â In the six inning, SCSU's Hoffman went yard with a two run runner that scored Sorensen and made the final tally 7-0. Â
The shot was Jurgella's team-leading fifth homer of the season, while Hoffman has four round trippers for SCSU in 2015.
In the second game, Jurgella collected a single in the first inning to score Arnold and the eventual game winning run. Â In the fifth inning, SCSU added one more run with an RBI single by Arnold while an RBI single in the sixth by Beau Fandel scored Sorensen and made the score 3-0. Â In the seventh inning, SCSU iced the cake with a solo home run by Loxtercamp and an RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Arnold.
On the mound, Sheldon Miks was impressive as he notched the nine inning complete game shutout. Â He allowed just two hits in the game and struckout eight batters. Â He allowed just one walk in the game and only threw 84 pitches in the game.
"Sheldon's (Miks) performance today was outstanding," SCSU coach Pat Dolan said. Â "It is very rare to see a pitcher finish a complete nine inning game with just 84 pitches. Â He was really dialed in today and was a key to our success. Â Our offense also turned in two good performances against a good Wayne State ballclub."
The Huskies will complete their weekend series against Wayne State with a doubleheader at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. Â The first game is slated to begin at Noon on Saturday, April 4. Â Tickets for the games can be purchased at the gate and plenty of good seats are available at game time.
