#2 St. Cloud State baseball gains two more wins on April 4

The #2 St. Cloud State University baseball team (28-2, 12-2 NSIC) complete a perfect weekend of play in always rugged Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a pair of victories over Wayne State College (12-14, 7-7 NSIC) on Saturday, April 4. Â SCSU posted an 18-1 win in game one against WSC and then completed the sunny afternoon at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. with a thrilling 4-3 victory in 12 innings in game two.
SCSU finished the weekend with four wins over Wayne State and will travel to Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn. on April 8 for another NSIC doubleheader.
In game one, the Huskies outhit Wayne State 19-4 to gain the upper hand. Â Down 1-0 after the top half of the first inning, SCSU rallied with two runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning and one run in the third. Â In the bottom of the fifth inning, SCSU sealed the deal with 11 runs to make the tally 16-1. Â A pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning iced the contest and made the final tally 18-1.
Reese Gregory was the pitcher of record in the contest with four strikeouts and four hits allowed. Â Kevin Bolder and Garrett Anderson saw relief action in the final two innings to close out the game for SCSU. Â Gregory is now 5-0 on the season in 2015 for SCSU.
At the plate, Zak Hoffman posted a home run in the game and also added five hits, three runs and six RBIs in the game. Â Karl Sorensen added three hits, three runs and one RBI, while Brandon Arnold had two hits, three runs and three RBIs. Â Mike Jurgella also had two hits, two runs and two RBIs for the Huskies in game one.
In game two, Wayne State' s Dylan McGill charted seven innings of impressive pitching work that featured 10 strikeouts. Â SCSU gained a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning with a home run by Zach Hoffmann that scored Arnold. Â WSC charged back with runs in the fifth and sixth innings and then took a 3-2 lead with another run in the seventh.
In the ninth inning, SCSU a single by Kyle Lieser scored the game tying run when Jackson Goplen crossed the plate. Â The two squads battled through three extra innings before Hoffmann clinched the victory with a double to centerfield that scored Jurgella.
Ryan Diers was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Logan Spitzack, who went 6.1 innings with four strikeouts. Â Diers ended the game with seven strikeouts, one hit allowed and no runs allowed in 5.2 innings of work. Â Diers is now 5-0 on the season for SCSU.
"We really needed a game like that where we had to make a comeback to win," coach Dolan said. Â "Wayne's starter really pitched well and held our offense in check early in the game, so it was nice to see our players battle back to get the win in extra innings. Â We had to go deep into our bench at the end of the game and it really shows that it takes the whole team to win games.Â
"We continue to play well this season and to pick up four wins against a tough NSIC opponent like Wayne State reflects the character of our team."
