St. Cloud State Football’s Rally Comes Up Short in 21-20 Loss to Southwest Minnesota State
9/19/2015 8:51:00 PM | Football
ST CLOUD, Minnesota – The St. Cloud State football team (1-2, 0-0 NSIC) rallied from 14 points down in the fourth quarter, but came up just short in a 21-20 loss to Southwest Minnesota State (3-0, 0-0 NSIC) on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Husky Stadium in the school's annual Celebrate! St. Cloud State game. The Huskies have now lost two games in a row.
SMSU took advantage of a fourth down special teams' penalty to extend the initial stalled opening drive and score the game's first touchdown on a Blake Gimbel to Davion Shelton 22-yard passing play.
Another special teams' miscue on a blocked SCSU punt by SMSU gave the Mustangs a short field and led to a Davonta Stevens three-yard rushing touchdown for the second score of the game to put the Southwest Minnesota State up 14-0 with 7:38 remaining in the opening quarter.
After punts from both teams, the SCSU offense cut the deficit in half on sophomore Jaden Huff's one-yard plunge into the end zone to finish off a seven-play, 61-yard drive. Junior quarterback Nate Meyer connected on passes of 29 yards and 19 yards to junior Jameson Parsons to put the Huskies in prime scoring position.
Southwest Minnesota State would again extend the lead to 14 points on a Gimbel one-yard scamper to cap off a grinding 13-play, 67-yard drive. Ashanti Payne ran for 30 of those yards on his eight carries.
The score remained the same with both defenses playing their part until the fourth quarter when Huff finished off a nine-play, 58-yard drive with his second one-yard touchdown of the game to cut the margin to a 21-14.
The SCSU defense forced a punt on the ensuing SMSU drive to give the offense the ball back with 8:07 remaining in the game. The Huskies offense proceeded to march down the field on an 11-play, 80-yard drive. One of the key plays of the drive was Meyer connecting with senior tight end Grant Thayer on a one-handed reception for 29 yards to flip the field and move the ball all the way to the Mustangs' 13-yard line. The offense continued its quest for the end zone and reached the goal line on a Huff five-yard rush to set up first-and-goal. After stops on first and second down, Meyer ran it in himself from three-yards out to bring the Huskies to within a point at 21-20 with the potential tying extra point to come. The extra point was missed wide right though to allow SMSU to keep the lead in an eventual SCSU loss by the same margin.
